So I was wondering if there is any way for a creature to come back to life from undead. For instance, if reincarnate was cast on an undead, can they be resurrected as a non unedead creature?
I don't know if there's an official answer, but a way i've seen it done is asking for the undead to be defeated, and then cast a spell to bring the body back to life.
I know of a Bard that was thinking of casting Mending on some orphan paste created by skeletons under his control who unexpectedly used orphans as mortar for a new orphanage.
When the DM took a drink from a flask filled with some strong liquor, the Bard reconsidered the option and chalked up 15 dead orphans to his innocent kill count. (Each party member has innocent kill counts greater than enemy kill counts. Only one of them is happy about that, not the Bard, though.) Good news was they didn't need an orphanage anymore... and the Bard learned that micromanaging might have been the better option than he had originally thought. (Once informed of how many orphans he indirectly killed, the DM handed him the flask.)
(This is my first attempt to use a tooltip.) 🤞 EDIT: Darn. It's not "Mend." 🤦♂️

I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.

I really love your DM. What an amazingly awful idea!
And congratulations on your first tooltip! It's the best feature of this forum IMO.
Not my DM, but I wish it were. Same with the party. I wish they were mine.
The Bard wanted to test the skeletons to see if anything the skeletons were told to do would always have some horrible result involved. The Druid said, "I think we already did!" The Warlock hoped Mending would create some zombie orphans to order around.
The party also never let the Bard live down his 15-count orphan kill.
On the subsequent adventure after reuniting with a previous NPC questgiver: NPC: "What's been happening with you lately." Warlock: "Well, most recently we—" Bard: "—We-did-lots-of-things-that-aren't-important-right-now."
The Bard had taken a no-name NPC and dragged it into the adventure, teasing the DM and making the DM come up with a name and a long backstory, which the DM suddenly decided it would include the said orphanage... NPC: "So, how is the orphanage?" Warlock: "Aren't you glad you asked—" Bard: "—You know. The past is the past, and the important thing is what we do from here." ...ending any further teasing from the Bard regarding the DM not having a pointless character completely fleshed out.

True resurrection is the only spell that can specifically return an undead creature to non-undead life.

True Polymorph could get the job done in a roundabout way as well, although with some complication.
