I would say no, because while some simple weapons meet the power of martial weapons, they aren't usually as good. If your starting equipment doesn't want to be as good, then it shouldn't be, unless DM overruled.

By the rules, no. Practically speaking, check with your DM. If I was the DM, I'd probably rule along the lines of what DxJxC said and let you swap them for something of equal value.

Warlock, no way i need 2 knives and 2 simple weapons (i know one simple weapon is just an alternative to a small crossbow but i dont feel my character would use a crossbow)

Well, as I see, there is no point in swapping items in the starting equipment, when you can take the Starting Wealth instead (pg 143 PHB) , for warlocks that means you get 4d4 x 10, so that's an average of 80 Gold pieces, so that can get you Scale Mail or a Chain shirt, 2 shortswords (I would think you would want to dual wield, given the question), and an arcane focus. Pretty much all you need. That doesn't even count background GP (average about 10 I should think).
