Message is a Transmutation spell because it changes your whisper into a sound that can travel very far, but still be super quiet. It isn’t a “mental” communication, it’s an actual sound that has been changed. Changing things is Transmutation.
Nah, Message doesn't say it transmutes the whisper, and that doesn't make sense considering that Transmutation largely effects matter. Not that the spell schools are hard and fast rules, but...
Transmutation spells change the properties of a creature, object, or environment. They might turn an enemy into a harmless creature, bolster the strength of an ally, make an object move at the caster's command, or enhance a creature's innate healing abilities to rapidly recover from injury.
A "whisper" isn't a creature, object, or environment. Now, you do point at the recipient and target them with the spell, so I suppose you could be changing the properties of their hearing so that they can specially detect your voice, no matter how faint, and their voice, so that you can hear it, no matter how faint? Its a little unsual, since it doesn't require line of sight to the creature, which I'm pretty sure is required in 100% of other spells that alter an outside creature, and involves transmuting their body with no possibility of a save... but it could fit.
Plenty of other schools would thematically make sense for Message] as well.
Illusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, to miss things that are there, to hear phantom noises, or to remember things that never happened. Some illusions create phantom images that any creature can see, but the most insidious illusions plant an image directly in the mind of a creature.
Causing an illusionary echo of your whisper to appear in the targets ear makes at least as much sense, if not more, than altering that ear (with no line of sight and no save).
Evocation spells manipulate magical energy to produce a desired effect. Some call up blasts of fire or lightning. Others channel positive energy to heal wounds.
If we're manipulating sound waves to make them travel further and behave in novel fashions, that's Evocation.
Divination spells reveal information, whether in the form of secrets long forgotten, glimpses of the future, the locations of hidden things, the truth behind illusions, or visions of distant people or places.
Divination is an obvious pick, since there are no shortage of other spells that do the same thing Message does, transporting words or thoughts over distances.
Conjuration spells involve the transportation of objects and creatures from one location to another. Some spells summon creatures or objects to the caster's side, whereas others allow the caster to teleport to another location. Some conjurations create objects or effects out of nothing.
Heck, if you're literally "throwing" your voice (say, you open a portal that your whisper passes through that re-opens next to your targets ear, so the whisper has only traveled a few inches), Conjuration could fit.
Maybe it has to do with the material component, the copper wire, that maybe you transmute in some way that it can transmit your message? Just spitballing.

?????????? (question marks added cause l forgot to in the title)
it should be enchantment! (conj or div maybe, but not transmutation!)
I agree completely, I don't understand why it's transmutation. Telepathic bond is divination, and message should be as well.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
