Hi. Today a druid character has cast the Spike Growth spell to grow tspikes and thorns on a terrain with werewolves. Werewolves cannot be damaged by normal weapons, only magic. Is spike damage magic damage?
Technically in 5e there is no “magical damage” per se. there is only damage from regular sources and damage from magical sources. If the source of the damage is magical (like a spell or a magical weapon) then that damage overcomes resistance against damage from nonmagical sources.
So is conjure animals, but sage advice says if its not in the stat block then no
The difference with Conjure Animals is that the spell isn't dealing damage, the spell itself just creates the animals, which aren't themselves magical. Where as with Spike Growth, it's the spell effect itself that is causing the damage, thus it is magical.

Thx.
It's damage as result of a effect of a spell, so yep, it's magical
