OK, for a couple weeks now, my group had not played for several reasons (all players cancelled last minute tonight and everyone forgot their D&D stuff last week) but I showed and was prepared to play so he is giving me any 1 magical item., preferably "official" so it's not broken Any suggestions? Or maybe a Homebrew that is a slight mod. I am the black sheep of the group.
My first thought as well. Rod of absorption is also great for warlocks (I just barely prefer it over rod of pact keeper +3), that may be pushing your luck though.
I prefer the Rod of the Pact Keeper because it can only be used by warlocks, no other spell caster can use it, and it's always usable. The Rod of Absorption can only absorb spells when your opponent is casting spells that target you and aren't area of affect spells.
I don't know if your DM would allow it but out of the DMG there is the Robe of the Archmagi. There are 3 colors each associated with an alignment and you can't wear a robe that isn't your alignment. It gives you 15 + Dex for your AC if you aren't wearing armor, you have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and your DC ans spell attack bonus each increase by 2. It is a legendary item so it may be off the table. I'd ask your DM if he has any restrictions other than it being an official item, like rarity or major or minor items. Since we also don't know what level you are playing at, we really can't give you a good magic item for your level and the stuff we would suggest could be higher than what the DM would allow. I hope this helped.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
At level 5, Robe of the Archmagi is unlikely, though awesome if you can get it. Rod of the Pact Keeper is a great choice, and you might be able to get a +2. One of my favorite options for low rarity magic items (for anyone really, but especially ranged characters). Is a Broom of Flying. It's uncommon without attunement and lets you fly at will.
He said I can ANYTHING. I tend to hang back in a fight and used ranged attacks and Innvokations. (I tend to hoard my spell slots) and in non combat, I act like a Rogue constantly searching for traps/items I can salvage. Also I'm not officially a Level 5 Warlock Until we play so I could multiclass.
Items I've looked at: Robe of the Archmagi , Anstruth harp/INSTRUMENT OF THE BARDS (since we lost our only healer), or the Ring of Three Wishes (I already told him I'd wish for unlimited wishes and he didn't balk)
The Robe of the Archmagi is effectively a Rod of the Pact Keeper +2 plus a base AC of 15 plus a bonus on saving throws vs. any magical effects. My warlock would rather have that than a Staff of the Magi even!

If your DM will let you have Unlimited wishes go with that (or don't, too broken).
If your DM will let you have robe of the archmagi go with that (but try to get a rod of the pact keeper in game as soon as possible, even a +1 to start with is fine, the bonuses stack).
Could you target yourself with a spell to charge the Rod of Absorption up? It can take 50 lvls of charge, and you can convert lvls into spell slots max of lvl 5 (convenient for a warlock that aint it?) potentially giving you 10 lvl 5 spells. Hell you could cast Armor of Agathys using the spell slots from the rod and instantly recharge it!

I think that would work - an extra 16 3rd level slots and 2 2nd level slots FOR MOST FIGHTS (need a few minutes to fully recharge).
Another magic item that's great for warlocks is the illusionist's bracers. They basically allow you to cast Eldritch Blast twice per turn using your bonus action.
If considering "The Best" item for a spellcaster and literally any item in the book is on the table, it's extremely hard to beat a Staff of the Magi. You gain access to a huge reserve of secondary spellcasting that lets you reserve your pact slots, you can nullify any spell targeted specifically at you if you ensure the staff isn't fully charged (which you should absolutely do), you gain a +2 to your spell attack rolls that stacks with both Robes of the Archmagi and a Rod of the Pact Keeper (though a DM may disallow the latter alongside the Staff). The fact that the staff is also a +2 quarterstaff and could actually serve as a respectable Hexblade/Pact of the Blade weapon is just a sweet bonus.
The Staff of the Magi, by itself, is more powerful than a mid-level spellcaster. Seriously - next time you (any of you) are up for a short campaign or a funky one-shot, ask your DM if you can play a wizard/sorcerer/warlock whose magic has been sealed, shutting off access to all their arcane class features, but who bears their master's staff instead. It's a cool twist, and also the only chance most of us would ever get to play with a Staff of the Magi.
If your DM comes to his senses and says "items appropriate to a level 5 warlock", then yeah. A +1 Rod of the Pactkeeper, or a +2 if you can crit your IRL Persuasion check. If you're Bladelocking, maybe a Scimitar of Speed; those are lots of fun but nobody ever gets to mess with one. Heh, a Bladelock with both a Pact rod and a Scimitar of Speed would be great.
This doesn't have anything to do with spell casters or warlocks, but my favorite to go magic items would be alchemy jug and deck of many things. The DM might not appreciate the whole deck of many things ruining a campaign though. Alchemy jug is so much fun. Want a snack, honey. Want to make a trap, oil. Saving a fish, salt water or fresh water. Want to distract a dragon, mayonnaise of course.
To throw in something a little different, Mask of the Dragon Queen resistance to 5 elements that stacks with other sources of resistance/immunity, cha bonus to AC that stacks with mage armor (but not with actual armor), 5/day legendary resistance, a few other effects.
That works much better if you have another spell caster fill the ring with spells. A warlock can only put one spell in a Ring of Spell Storing, a friend can put in 3 or 4 depending on what level they are.
The magic item my warlock has gotten the most use out of is the humble Bag of Holding. I can go inside, take a short rest, and regain my spell slots while the party is traveling. My Imp can also take me to places I can't otherwise get to that require flight or squeezing through small holes.
I'm a Warforged so I don't need to breathe, but as long as the creature holding you opens the top periodically you should be fine.
Theoretically I could also pop out of the invisible flying bag, attack, and go back in to safety every round. That would annoy everyone at the table and likely end with the bag torn and me in the Astral Plane, so I haven't tried it.

Rod of the Pact Keeper +1, +2 if you can get away with it.

Why you shouldn't start ANOTHER thread about DDB not giving away free redeems on your hardcopy book purchases.
Thinking of starting ANOTHER thread asking why Epic Boons haven't been implemented? Read this first to learn why you shouldn't!

Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.

I'd agree that the Pact Keeper's Rod +1 would be level appropriate. Take that one and run with it!
DICE FALL, EVERYONE ROCKS!
Another one that is a right behind any pact keeper rod: Ring of Spell Storing Having another spell slot is always handy.
