How would one run a monster campaign. Like leveling up "classes". Some of my players and I toss this what if in the air all the time and I haven't the slightest clue on how to put this monster truck on wheels lol.
Leveling up monsters have official rules, but for monsters as PC’s , it would be better to create a converted PC race for playing as a monster, because the super slow advancement of a monster is usually unsuitable for a player.
As a DM, In my irl group anything but the Core rules (and supplemental with permission) is usually created in cooperation between me and the player, so I can check for balance.

Do you mean a campaign where the PCs are monster races with adventurer class levels, or do you mean a campaign where the PCs are just straight up monsters out of a bestiary?
If it's the former, just homebrew any monster races which don't already exist, and play as normal.
If it's the latter, things get trickier depending on the specifics of the monsters your PCs want to play. Gonna need to homebrew basically everything, and closely monitor what each character gets access to for balance. The basics of leveling up would probably be more or less standard. Additional HD, scaling proficiency bonus, and an ASI at 4/8/12/16/19.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
You should check out the webcomic goblins. It started in 3e when you could do such a thing but it’s pretty great. Starts off Mostly just funny, but has gotten incredibly dramatic and good.
It has fun with some D&D standards, like the goblins asking why they don’t use the magic items in the poorly locked chest, instead of just leaving them in the chest.

choose a CR (probably less than 5) and everyone chooses a monster of that rating. Then add class levels when you advance.
