it basically allows you to do "npc magic" in terms of what creatures you can create or "summon", since you can create any creature of CR 9 or lower, or if you have acess to a strong creature you can make creatures of challenge ratings even higher, as long as you are able to reflavour the spell well you can use it as an necromancer to create any undead creature you are normally unable to create by just targeting a corpse, for demon cultists it basically a way for you to "sacrofice" an creature or object to gain acess to an creature no other spell can summon, such as an succubi or an pit fiend or a yugoloth, want to create an certain type of construct? well shure you can! want to have a child/ offspring without having to get intimate with somebody? boom, instant human person from nothing, you can even have them adopt the stat block of an powerful spell caster. You heard that in the lore elven high magic could turn worthy elves into dryads? well as an spellcaster with true polymorph you could do that as well, want to turn somebody into an abyssal wretch as an punishment? go for it!
it also allows you to gain infinite acess to every material component you will ever need, just take a creature, cast this spell, concentrate for an hour and boom you have an 10 000 gp diamond to use for your spells or a bag full of diamond powder for glyph of warding or planar binding, or some other exotic material that is in some way necessary for your magical experiments, there are no limits to what objects you are allowed to transform a creature into, no limit to how valuable it can be,as long as it is nonmagical according to the erratra

It's definitely one of the most interesting 9th level spells. One of the few that holds its own against Wish as an ideal choice for spellcasters. But keep in mind that any true polymorph'd creature can still be dispelled back into their original form.
well if i turn somebody into some kind of spell component and cast a spell that consumes the object that person was turned into, well it is going to be rather difficult to cast dispel magic on an object that does not exist...

Does a full duration True Polymorph override the transformed creature reverting to it's former shape when their HP goes to 0? Cause I think an object being consumed as a spell component would be at least somewhat analogous to its HP going to 0.
From what I'm reading on the spell... having the polymorph broken by being reduced to zero only applies if it hasn't lasted the full hour to become permanent. At that point I believe the only way to undo the polymorph is through being dispelled. If someone is True Polymorphed into a T-Rex and gets reduced to 0 HP, they just fall down as an unconscious T-Rex and don't automatically revert to their true forms.
You can turn your whole party immortal from True Polymorph, buy turning them into Pit Fiends, or Planetars, or some other CR 20 or less creatures. You can then start regaining levels again, as monsters can gain levels as described in the DMG pg. 283. You can also create followers up to CR 9 from casting true polymorph on some objects, and some how convince them you are their deity.
Very powerful spell, you can become a Demigod from it, or God with DM's permission.

yeah only prblem is the loss of all class levels, other than that great spell
You do lose your levels, but they won't be hard to regain because you are now CR 20, or something similar, so you can easily kill others to regain XP and levels, if your DM allows it.

fair point i guess, still a lot of hard work to get all the way back to the top but i guess you are right, with the "head start" of being a pit fiend, you could gain character levels at an rapid pace but still, it is a lot of work, and your old stats, all that made you unique is now gone, that might often be a shame
and annoyingly, this spell almost provides a way in witch a player character can become a lich, but sadly the CR of lichdom is just one point away from the level cap, unless you treat epic boons / epic abillity score improvements as levels above 20, but then you are giving up an gosh darn epic boon in order to be an skeleton dude, that might not be worth it, were it not for the abillity to be a lich.
also i really did say "prblem" didint i? *sigh*

If "True Polymorph" can be dispelled, would turning someone into a spell component count as an actual spell component since dispelling them returns them to their true form regardless? I mean, their true form kept all tangled up in the Weave would still be the thing the Weave goes by. Right?

well whilst they are transformed, they cease to be a creature and start being an object, and since there is no specific cluase that prevents me from using them as an component unlike stuff like the creation spell, i am going to assume so? yeah it is strange

But as a storytelling device, it makes sense that the Weave recognizes what it really is since releasing it from the spell returns its form. As a storytelling device, it also explains away why nobody else has been doing it if it's that simple.

Yeah, it is weird, but they are super challenging, but the Acererak's followers demiliches are much more powerful than an ordinary lich or demilich. Maybe if you make a phylactery, and polymorph yourself into a demilich, and feed a soul to the phylactery you can turn into a lich?

You can make a phylactery, and then link your soul to it, with DM discretion, maybe? I don't know, not many rules on how to make a phylactery in 5e, but the DM could allow you to do it.

Unclevertitle [#4]: "Does a full duration True Polymorph override the transformed creature reverting to it's former shape when their HP goes to 0?"
No.
TransmorpherDDS [#5]: "From what I'm reading on the spell... having the polymorph broken by being reduced to zero only applies if it hasn't lasted the full hour to become permanent."
Incorrect.

Objects have hit points too (see Chapter 15 of the Basic Rules/Chapter 8 of the Dungeon Master's Guide). When the object's hit points are reduced to 0, the spell ends. Maintaining concentration for the full hour only does one thing: change the duration from 1 hour (concentration) to 'until dispelled'. That's it.
