So my wife and I are going to try D&D in both Duet fashion and we will be joining a regular run campaign.
I however am trying to setup the Duet game to get us used to D&D. I got the PHB and Essentials from D&D Beyond. Trying to find the best way to actually get this to the table but would love to see some kind of overview on how to use D&D Beyond and run your first campaign.
I think we may actually use Roll20 - And I have run through the videos on using the chrome plugin and got it setup for our sessions. I guess I am just a little confused on how to run the game from the online book and to the either table or virtual table perspective.
I combed the General Discussion, Tips and Tricks, and the did the best I could with YouTube and just can't find a good intro on how to make D&D Beyond work with either the table top or a virtual table top. It's probably somewhere stupidly obvious knowing my luck I rolled a 1 on on searches.
For Regular Tabletop Use. You will need to start a “campaign” on DDB. You will each need a device (phone, tablet, computer, whichever). Now, there’s the cheaper way, and the functionally “better way” to proceed:
The Cheaper Way. You can both use the same account since there will only be the two of you it won’t matter too much. You won’t need a subscription, but things will get more complicated this way since the DM status follows the account, not the devices. So you will need to use the honor system. The DM will need to start a “campaign.”
The Functionally “Better” Way. And you will both need to be logged in to your own accounts. One of those accounts will need a “Master Tier Subscription” ($55+tax/year so less expensive than and X-Box gold account) so you can both access the materials in the books you have purchased through content sharing. It doesn’t matter which account. Whichever one of you will DM will have to start a “campaign” and send the invite link to the other. The other will join the campaign. Whichever of you has the subscription will activate “content sharing” and then you can both use the same book materials.
Continuing either way. Whoever is the player will need to make a character in that campaign using the purchased materials. DDB makes the process fairly plug and play so not difficult to do. Whoever I’d the DM will need an adventure for the player to experience. I recommend this video series for new DMs:
Thank you so much. Just started watching this series. Good stuff. So I think we are off to a good start. We both have accounts here and I have the master sub and shared materials via inviting her to a campaign.
I was finally able to sit down on Roll20 last night and actually import the maps for each quest scenario for our essentials adventure. Had a hard time sizing it and dealing with the grid until Google provided me with an answer - turn off Roll20 grid and just use the one on the actual D&D Beyond maps!

That’s it.
For VTTs. I have no idea, I don’t use them.
I hope this was helpful.

Next up figuring out how to handle sidekicks!
I’m glad. Happy to help. You can add sidekicks to a character’s sheet under the “Extras” tab.
