So the thesis would be, you can take the attack action with anything which doesn’t specifically dictate a different action to attack with it. “As an action...” precludes it being part of the attack action, as do spells and such which chapter 9 already tells us belong to different actions, but otherwise, anything goes, even if it isn’t a “weapon.”
Okay, checks out. Using a sling allows for Extra attack, assuming you have the class feature. But does that mean you no longer can attack at the typical 60ft range from the spell? It would seem like the trade off is you use the 30/120ft range, but get to multi attack.

It’s a “Spell Attack” and those do not have Disadvantage at long range so using a sling makes the Attack range a flat 120’ just like Fire Bolt.
That’s what I mean, Magic Stone is a better spell than people give it credit for.
Yes, that would be decent... I suppose you could travel with three hirelings (or Skeletons you’ve raised?) and essentially treat it like an off brand Eldritch Blast by having them use all three pebbles every round? That has potential...
Is the pebble attack a Special Action, or a Use an Object action, do you think? If it’s Use an Object, I suppose a Thief might be able to do it twice per round... and even a Familiar might be allowed to use it????
Also keep in mind that Magic Stone is on the Druid list and Druids can summon Apes using Conjure Animals. With a little preparation, you can create a firing squad with 1 spell and several uses of a cantrip.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
