Air Dry clay - Usually I have to barter with the DM about obtaining some from the sculptor's toolkit but its worth it. You can use it to make a relief of an artifact and its runes or perhaps you need to copy a key so you press it into the clay
caltrops - Always handy when in taverns or inns when you just don't trust your DM.
Clothes - Yes Armor and Robes are what they wear but , good luck being allowed into that nobles dinner party with people wearing full plate, leather hoods, and robes that just smell like death and blood.
Pots and pans - Cool you killed that deer now what...You eat it? ok How ?
Sunrod/ Torch -at least one person can't see in the dark and doesn't want to hold your hand
hand Mirror- Sometimes you just don't want to risk poking your head around a corner
Flint & Steel - Two reasons, first, you have a torch, how do you plan to light it? and second, you never know when you need to smoke out a cave of enemies.
If you can get it, an item to let characters to talk telepathically - FREE TABLE TALK.
Thieves tools - You can't just go around bashing in every door.
Water canteen - You are walking through the desert, you feel thirsty, and you forgot you canteen at home (you could also fill it with poison).
Rope - could be used as a trip line, to climb, to help characters up, etc.

This is a must, useally my group finds someone to make this for them early on. between starting level and 15 it useally has a range of eye sight , after that I allow them to pay for an upgrade that allows them to talk as long as they are on the same plan of existence. Like a free Message spell
Another adventurer who has all of this gear who is weaker than you so you can bully them and take their stuff… Mouahahahaha!
Or it's similar what I did with my really stupid barbarian the last time: I sold myself to be the slave of my teammate for some pair of Gloves of Ogre Power. It helped me also to ease the temper when normally I would have acted foolish, because the boss was watching. :)
But for what? Other than the evident opening the doors/chests? I always saw them a bit useless, as the rogue could easily open any lock anyway, or the barbarian could smash what needed to be smashed.

Rogues don't always succeed at opening locks and there are times when you don't want to smash the chest and risk damaging it's contents. Plus it can be used to prop doors open or closed, which I've used them for more than once.
Some people hate them, But my party uses pitons a lot. climbing down steep, slippery cliff faces is very difficult without some support. they can also be used as spikes to hold something down, prop open door, hold up a tripwire, etc.
Also, a tinderbox. I know it's been said before, but my party has used this to a ridiculous extent. our rogue once snuck into a card game between high profile targets and lit one of their robes on fire while in stealth. The whole party used it to burn the bodies of our enemies as a sacrifice to the cleric's deity.

For me my must have item is
this is something really cool, we appreciate your input and like your post.
magic spells, money spells, love spells
Mirror, steel: 5gc: to see around corners.
Soap: 2cp: used like oil to lubricate things
Shovel: 2gp: you never know when you need to dig
Sledgehammer: 2gp: when you absolutely need to break something and no one has a Warhammer
Miner's Pick: 2gp: when you absolutely need to break something and and a sledgehammer won't work
Block & Tackle: 1gp: makes rope better sometimes for lifting... also good for lowering things.
Signal Whistle: 5cp: better then shouting when you're on night guard duty
FullMetalBunny -- wow, great ideas. I usually add a mule so I don't have to carry the shovel, pick, etc.
Empty bottles (stone and glass) -- collect stuff that comes out of monsters.
Lots of empty sacks -- don't take up much space, but good for carrying things , especially things I don't want stinking or messing up my backpack.

Bell and string - My rogue usually makes some trap to wake up the party in the room during long rest.
Acid - Never in fight, but for destroying evidence, opening some lock, etc.
Flint & Steel - Two reasons, first, you have a torch, how do you plan to light it? and second, you never know when you need to smoke out a cave of enemies.

Manacles - In case you need prisoners
Oil - Many uses of it. Build a trap, Mark an enemy, burn the whole place up!
Flour - AKA see Invisible creatures at a cheaper price
Ink and paper - As a diary or to just keep notes
A crowbar. I’ve used those several times.
