I've been struggling with this since autognome showed up in unearthed arcana.
My goals in a megaman build are:
athletics and mobility (because he's a platformer protagonist. the jump half of jump and shoot man.)
a buster (fire bolt? eldritch blast? hand crossbow? those ranged radiant punches from sunsoul monk?)
variable damage types (order of scribes? also makes stealing an opponent's ability easier by transcribing it to spellbook quickly. not a fan of d6 hit dice for someone made of ceratanium plating.)
variable range (a super fighting robot has to be able to get in there and mix it up (possibly with unarmed fighting style). another reason I'm not a fan of d6 hit dice, too.)
and most importantly: a dog to ride on. battlesmith's steel defender and tasha's ranger's primal companion would both actually work because autognome is small. Find steed could also be good for it but I don't know if he makes as much sense as a paladin.
artificer does seem pretty obvious, but I feel like, if I were going to go that route, I'd just make a more action-ready doctor light with mega man as his steel defender. rock making his own gear strikes me as weird. that's what doctor light's for. rock gets geared up by someone else, goes out, and does the fighting.
With your DM's permission, you could have Dr. Light as an NPC follower and say he's making all your artificer stuff. Just have him hang back when its time to fight or be in a globe of invunerability or something.
Warforged artilliarist (or armorer) would be my go to.
I said I didn't want to play an artificer because he doesn't make his own stuff, doctor light does. I also said rush is very important to this build for me, so if I was going to be an artificer I'd probably pick battle smith. I also said I wanted to play this as the (presently UA, hopefully upcoming) autognome, as megaman is small robot boy.
Anyway, I did manage to pick apart his smash 4 move list (it has more moves than smash ultimate because you could swap some out) and I managed to fit everything except the dog into a level 20 eldritch knight build. Closest an eldritch knight could get is Phantom Steed, but disappearing after one hit and a one minute casting time means that it's only good for travel and he can't be my battle buddy.
I will say that Rock “Megaman” was built as a lab assistant to Dr. Light. Having him be an artificer is sound. He’s just the type that tests and finds new uses of things his (higher level artificer) Father creates.
yeah, I actually worked on building a sheet and I gave him folk hero with the rustic hospitality swapped out for the sage ability for that reason. he knows how to find catalogued information and test for answers, but he's not going to build something in the middle of a mission
