Hi everyone, i want to play a Shadow Monk Changeling and need some ideas on what i could do.
Ill be playing waterdeep dragon heist and thought it would be fun to play a changeling. I could change into guards, random citizens and general sleuthing. I didnt want the other players to know im a changeling though which makes it hard. I had the idea of having a reversible cloak as when you shapeshift only your body changes, not your equipment. So when i change i could turn it inside out and have some sort of disguise.
What backstory ideas do you have? And what ideas did you have to change into and how/why?
For this type of character i feel like the backstory should be relatively simple. Maybe they were an urchin who used their shapeshifting ability and reversible cloak to rob the rich growing up, maybe they're a bored aristocrat who uses their abilities to steal just for the thrill, etc.
I don't think you wanna set up a complex backstory where you're a changeling AND you have a special magic cloak AND your childhood best friend is possessed by a god AND the king of the realm has a warrant for your arrest AND you used to be an airship captain until you crash landed in s rainforest AND were stranded for 3 years etc...
The majority of your adventures should happen during play, not before it, as a rule.
I'm getting ready to play a Changeling Cleric of Trickery, although she never changes form due to fear she could be found out she still loves traveling and never stays in one place for long. She was born in Neverwinter and grew up in an orphanage where she met who would become her two best friends, they have traveled on caravans to Mirabar, Baldur's Gate, and then our campaign will start with me on my way to Ten Towns.
My backstory that i was thinking of is simple. I never said it was going to be complex. And as for the cloak i just meant something simple like turning it inside out for it to look slightly different, not being magical.
The backstory i was thinking of doing is i come from a family of assassins/spys and waterdeep is my first mission. Something on those lines.
I just wanted to see what ideas others had with backstories and also how to change appearance without letting the other PCs know and if there was specific people you would change into (Famers, guards etc).
Thats a good one. I hadn't heard of that before. Though if i were to get that i think i would have to choose between shiftweave or goggles of night as we were allowed 1 magical item from game start and i thought the goggles of night would be best for a shadow monk that doesnt have darkvision.
I play a changeling warlock of the Genie(Marid) in a CoS campaign right noch, the Infusion "Mask of Many faces" does wonders for this type of shenanigans. You could try to take it via Eldritch Adept.
As to keeping it from the other PCs: You shouldn't take that too seriously, you'll not really use your changeling feature until you reveal it, so you should reveal it not too late.
Lmao sorry i didnt realise mask of many faces was apart of the game. I thought you meant like from game of thrones the many faced god. I just assumed you meant edritch adept into devils sight... my bad.
I don't see Changelings used enough IMHO. Sure, they don't have huge in-combat traits but in an urban setting or almost any RP scenario, they're great!

shiftweave is what you want, if your DM allows it.

You should ask your DM if they mind you using this to flesh out your backstory. http://dnd5e.*******.com/background:sword-coast-heroic-chronicle

You cant take eldritch adept as a monk unless you have 1 or 2 levels in warlock. I had looked into it already cause i was thinking of doing that.
That shouldn't be the case unless you're taking an invocation with a Prerequisite. As Mask of Many Faces doesn't have any, you could do that.
