I have a decent amount of physical books, but I made the mistake of getting them from Amazon instead of DNDBeyond a while back. I'm willing to buy the PHB on the website, but I was hoping there was a way I could buy the content only for the character creator, without having to order the actual book. Any help is appreciated!
You can do exactly this! If you go to any book and scroll down, you'll see a selection of options you can purchase from the book in order to make them available in the character builder without purchasing the full book.
Additionally, any purchase you do make will be credited towards the cost of buying the full book.
It should be noted that in most (if not all) cases, buying all the individual options of a book works out more expensive than just buying the book.
There are 28 subclass in it for $2 each. So it doesn't make sense to buy them individually if you want all of them. And that isn't counting all the races, backgrounds, feats etc.

But you can buy all of the subclasses for $9.99. I looked at buying the sections of the PHB vs buying the whole book. If you buy the whole book it is $29.99. If you buy the sections (Backgrounds, Subclasses, Feats, Subraces, and Spells) it costs $25.95. I am not sure what you would be missing out on if you just bought the sections, but that is really tempting!
Probably the actual book content. So you can use the character creator content fine, but you'll find that you don't have the rules etc to browse.

Not efficiently. The PHB for example is $30 (https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook)
