Ok so I was running Descent into Avernus and the rogue from my party rolled a 28 to pickpocket Mordenkainen (Path of demons) and stole his spellbook then the fighter used a wish to cast simulacrum (He got a ring of three wishes with a single charge from Gargauth cuz the cleric managed to roll a 000/100 casting "dispel evil and good"). So now my party has a "single use Mordenkainen" on their side. How do I del with this in your opinion? Should Mordenkainen get pissed for that? Also does anyone have an idea on which stats I should give him? (Thinking about a lvl 20 mage and the spellbook has every official spell released in it cuz you know....Its Mordenkainen we are talking about)
Just based off Mordenkainen‘s personality, the mage would probably hunt down and kill the simulacrum just out of personal pride. However, that is one of those things that would feel bad to the party - they burned one of their three wishes to get the thing, they might as well enjoy it.
I would probably make a level 20 Wizard of some sort (with half HP per simulacrum rules) and then give them a challenge where having a level 20 Wizard would be great. There’s that massive battlefield in Avernus filled with nasty monsters - maybe they find themselves having to cross a skirmish between a group of CR 20 or so demons - something where a wizard who can do massive amounts of AoE damage would really come in handy, but might not survive.
Which could lead to another fun moment - this is Mordenkainen we are talking about - you could give him some kind of “death curse” spell he developed where, as a reaction upon hitting zero HP, he can teleport his allies to a safe range and just convert his mass into pure energy. Then the players can climb into the crater formed by the detonation if they so wish and find some worthwhile loot from those big demons. That removed the simulacrum from play, but gives them a consolation prize so they’re not overly upset about wasting a Wish.
Zariel’s assassins often lurk here, so Mordenkainen presents a simulacrum of his true self that disintegrates into a pile of snow if it is destroyed. The real archmage remains deep inside his tower and swiftly shunts the building to another plane in times of danger.
The "Mordenkainen" that they saw wasn't actually Mordenkainen, so the spellbook that it has would not be anywhere near as in depth.
As for stats, if you want to make it as "Full Strength" as possible, there are stats for legendary characters in a few books: Laeral Silverhand is in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. And Tasha (one of Mordenkainen's contemporaries) is in The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. I would give them 1/4 the hit points (1/2 for the first simulacrum and then 1/2 again because that is what they made their simulacrum of.
If you don't want the full fire hose, then I would use Archmage or something less.

Simulacrum is a spell with the range of touch and a casting time of 12 hours, so why didn't the "real" Mordenkainen react when someone tried to hold hands with him for a whole day?
I'm being forcefully reminded of Meet the Spartans, all of a sudden.

Wish has a casting time of one action, regardless of what the underlying casting time of the spell you are casting via wish might be. Here, Wish casts Simulacrum in the span of a regular action.
The Simulacrum spell specifies that the duplicate "appears the same as the original" but is "formed without any equipment." The hand of Vecna is a weird case because it replaces a creature's hand, but I would still consider it equipment and say the duplicate does not have it, and would just be missing a hand.

Well, haaaa, Mordenkainen is a well known prick, so if he ever snaps out of it that party will be hamburger.

Thx everyone for answers, you have been very helpful 😄
Btw if someone were to use simulacrum on Arkhan would the simulacrum have no hand or a nonmagical copy of the hand? (Just curiousity)

Thanks for answer mate, you are about a year late tho😅
