Curious to hear everyone's favorite city might be from their experiences playing D&D.
My table leans heavily into Waterdeep, and I admit to loving everything about that city...the way you can essentially find nearly every kind of race there, the Yawning Portal tavern, the cool Masked Lord politics, the mages that dwell there, the City Watch, the Undermountain...
But then I start hearing about other cities like Baldur's Gate (which seems like a crime-ridden city), and Silverymoon, which sounds like this "perfect" city that believes in being noble and good.
It occurs to me that I might know as much about these other places.
So go ahead; share your thoughts about your favorite fantasy city...it doesn't even have to be on the same plane of existence if you don't want.
Probably Waterdeep (because Xanathar) or Sigil (the center of the universe).

All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
Excluding homebrew, Sigil. The factions needed some pruning, they started off a little Vampire: The Masquerade-y. And scene descriptions were a pain because even just going to the pub meant navigating an MC Escher painting. But I liked the Lady, and it reminded me of a pan-dimensional city from an old comic book I liked, so I could start saying people on one block had laser guns that only worked on their block, because they had more science than magic. If the players weren't into that, that block ended up 'out of phase,' going back where it came from, and no harm done to the setting.
My favorite homebrew city has never gotten any use, strangely enough, I was thinking of getting back into D&D at the time, but missed a window and kind of ended up writing a small bible about a place called Ste. Placide for nothing. Or at least, nothing yet.
My current homebrew city is about to get destroyed by the armies of a dracolich. But the people are tough. They'll rebuild. Assuming the heroes get there in time and anyone survives. If not, I suppose I could always move the action to Ste. Placide and finally get some use out of it.
Way way back, I had the Lankhmar set. I always liked that. It had a Random Alley map kind of feature that I've used a few times since, including Sigil's Hive. I like the Lankhmar set and Waterdeep's City System more than I liked Lankhmar or Waterdeep per se. I DO like the walking statues in Waterdeep. I keep forgetting they exist. But they're fun and unique.
I think I'd get into Sharn, I've just never had an Eberron campaign.
I always thought the Rock of Bral had potential. It had a nice Deep Space Nine kind of flexibility, where one day it could be Casablanca and another day it could be a Western fort under siege. Speaking of forts, The Keep on the Borderlands is no one's idea of a city, but it's a great setting.
I kind of dig what they've done with Saltmarsh. And it reminds me that small-town politics can be every bit as scheming and intricate as big city politics.
I haven't played in nearly enough cities to have a definitive favorite, but I love the idea of Sigil and really want a 5e sourcebook to cover it. Of the cities that have been printed in 5e, Sharn in Eberron seems really interesting.
The only thing I know about Sigil is that it's this inter-planar city that allows people to travel anywhere between the planes.
I imagine that such a place has an amazing history behind it...and would be a considerable target.
Can you imagine an entity from the Far Realm somehow getting into Sigil and spreading madness to every corner of the planes...?
Come to think of it...with all these subclasses suggesting origins from different planes...Lurker Warlock, Wildfire Druid, Heroism Paladin or Revived Rogue and whatnot...seems like Sigil is ripe for the setting of a new campaign book.
Sigil, shame WotC does not seems to have any interest in updating Planescape to 5E. I hoped with Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus we would start to see more planar stuff.
Baldurs gate is my favorite place to run as DM. I have a campaign set on that area with candlekeep and nashkel and all those areas. Plus I've expanded it outside and added in a whole world as well. It's a lot of fun having those old game NPCs involved and alive doing things.
So because everyone here seems to love FR settings
it’s a tie between Waterdeep and Sharn, both of these cities are my individual favorite for there own setting for just the sheer amount of stuff in them, the huge amount of lore that they come with, there own political polices. These two just keep competing for my favorite spot on the favorite platform

I've only been to Neverwinter and Waterdeep so far. I'm just amazed as to how huge the cities are.
It is. Sadly, I only used the hall of justice for a prologue chapter, for my brother. He was testifying against the big bad from Lost mines of phindelver, and was trying not to get the two doppleganger, that were working for the big bad a lighter sentence than death. My brother won the case, and the dopplegangers were allowed probation, under the supervision of one of the NPcs in the same campaign.

Dont know why I rambled like that.
Hahahahaha. A court case. That would be fun to roleplay.

It was being overseen by an Adult brass dragon, a young gold dragon, and a ancient Silver dragon. My brother's character had convince, two or all 3 of them.
Everything here seems to be FR or Eberron. Though I did see a Greyhawk. So I'll throw my hat into the ring, and seeing as Critical Role is getting an official sourcebook, that's what I'm using. There are a couple Exandrian cities that I like. One is Emon, mostly because the first campaign I DMed was centered around Emon and it holds a special place in my heart. Another is Rosohna/Ghor Dranas. Just the idea of a city of monsters that used to be a city of evil gods sounds so cool. Plus both names sound pretty cool. Vasselheim is also one of my favorites. The idea of a bastion of civilization that has stood the test of time for hundreds or even thousands of years, against the primal elementals, the Betrayer Gods, Vecna, and more, just sounds so cool.

Sharn, Ravnica, Waterdeep.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Saltmarsh is a fun one, I’d like to get more adventures in new cities from WoTC.
