Do you have to subscribe to create an use homebrew features? I have been trying to create some sub-classes and I keep either getting error messages say it is too similar to another subclass like champion, or that it cannot be shared so I cannot use it (never given the option to submit it). Is there a tutorial to follow so I can figure out what I am doing wrong?
You only need to subscribe if you want to post your homebrew for everyone to be able to use, but many folks really don't recommend it, since once you publish your homebrew for public use, you can't edit it to fix any errors, only create a new version. You can use any homebrew you make yourself or share it within a campaign without needing a subscription.
There is also a homebrew subforum here on this site if you have further questions about getting your homebrew to function.

If a subclass is too similar to an official subclass you cannot publish it. That doesn’t mean you cannot use it yourself or share it with players in a campaign. Just be aware that sometimes when you create a subclass it takes a while before it becomes available for you to select in the character builder. I would recommend that you do not publish anything for public use unless you are 1000% sure it is error free and you do not need to make changes. Especially if you only want to use it for your own group.
I'm trying to make a Samurai Dragonborn and everything I do is either too similar or has some error that I cannot find. Very frustrating. I really don't want to have to pay to look at the details of the other Samurai sub-classes so I can figure out what I am doing wrong when trying to create mine. I'll try building one that is private and see if I can get it to go. Thanks for the suggestions.
I used to play in the late 70's and early 80's. We did everything by hand an paper with a pencil. LOL This is all new to me.

The 'error' you're encountering is a common warning but it shouldn't stopping you, have you selected to allow Homebrew content in your character?
