Just looking for some advice thinking of sending my players the reason for there meet up prior to there first session and not sure if that's a good thing or not. We are doing session 0 in the next couple days and I'm planning on doing a little character get to know each other before the campaign actual starts if that male sense.
Session 0 is a good time to figure out who knows who and why the adventurers might be working together. You can throw ideas out, you can have them work around an initial scenario you outline, or you can all work together to think of something.
I love to have connections between party members before their first adventure. Sure, you can always begin with the trope "You all meet in the tavern, and..." or "You are summoned by (insert local official) who wants you to (insert quest)", but I think it adds much more depth to have connections that exist before that point. You can ask players during Session 0 who might have met before or you can add links as part of their backstories.
Another option, if you have a group of four or more PCs is to run or narrate mini-encounters where they first meet. In my current campaign, two players made elven characters, so I said that both came from the same region and that they had met once when they were younger. The players have since turned this into them treating each other like siblings.
In addition, you can ask players to create rumors about their characters that others may have heard. I like to include both good and bad rumors and will sometimes let them add a false one to the mix. This encourages Role Play and helps them all get to know more about each other.
Absolutely a good idea. It'll help your players get in character before the session if they know their characters' motivations for being there. You don't necessarily have to give them all the same reason either - maybe one's there for a relative they haven't heard from in a long time and they're getting worried, another was asked by a local clergyman they knew from before already to help with trouble brewing among his flock, a third might be curious about rumours he heard, and so on. All of those reasons could be connected to the same big problem, but this way you can link each reason to an individual background and give a bunch of people who may not know anything about each other a reason to work together without needing an NPC sort of randomly selecting them to form a party.

This is what I sent my players "your characters you all receive an eloquently written invitation to a opening ceremony of a new town built in the forest of time. You're asked to spend the night at the "Minish Lodge" at Lake Kolomo quarter of a day's ride to the ceremony. Drinks are complementary as is food. Signed Mayor Itaav of Hikari town" and like what you guys have said let them make up their own reasons why they accepted the invite. They will meet a few possible notable NPCs and first impressions will see if they stick around or not😂

Any thoughts?
