Hey, first time on the forum, had a question on some homebrew magic item options-
So a player of mine is currently a Cowboy style character at level 2, going on 3 very soon. Playing a Fighter - soon to be Matt Mercer's gunslinger.
He asked me if he could have a wolf pet or companion at some stage ( this is after the first few sessions) so I came up with a couple ideas to introduce such a companion as an option. I thought it would be ok since we currently only have 3 players. He has now also asked, being this otherworldy character now trapped in this mostly fantasy world if he could get something that lets him turn into a wolf. I am debating weather or not to do both as I have came up with a couple of ideas.
My first Idea was something like an amulet- functioning mostly like a wand or 1 day use item at this stage- basically a couple charges of Wild shape, but limited to only a wolf and maybe a dire wolf down the track. not exactly sure on the balancing of this, or how it might change things given he's likely taking gunslinger down the track. I was also considering a low level Spiritual weapon spell, instead of wild shape, that would conjure (whichever player uses it's) spirit animal or something along those lines. - such as a wolf.
Any suggestions on what to go for? the spiritual weapon option doesn't turn the player into a wolf, but if I were introducing a companion (like dogmeat basically) later it might open up for that companion to take the amulet and things like that also. My final option would be to offer a class change, since we are around level 2 and come up with a way of including that in a lore friendly fashion.
Give him lycanthropy. If he wants to control it and not murder innocent peasants, he and his party must go on a quest for a magical items that allows him to control the disease. HB the magic item to allow him to resist the disease and focus it, a certain number of times per day, to change into the beast. Add some negatives, like negative reactions by NPCs, extra body hair, a taste for extra rare steaks, etc. You could even have a monster hunter or two pop up and ambush the party.
I think your amulet idea is fine. So would an item that gives him a cast of summon beast if you have access to that spell. I wouldn't call it wild shape though. You just take the form of a wolf for 1 hour, using their statistics.

I like the idea, i might throw it at him, any other suggestions are welcome!!
