Should a elf be allowed to do a 1/2 day of crafting when doing a long rest?
Me and a friend where talking about this the other day. I am honest I would let player that is playing a elf do this as part of there long rest as 4 hours is a good amount of time to be crafting it each day.
I’m pretty sure there’s a limit to how much work you can do in a day. Isn’t it like 8 hours of work being the max limit of what you can do a day? It would probably work for those extra 4 hours but not beyond the cap.

The 5.5e crafting rules don't specify any limit on how much work you can do in a day; they just say that you have to work 8 hours each day for it to count as a day toward the total number of days needed.
The rules do not say one way or the other whether working more than 8 hours in a single day can count as more than one day toward the total. This is one of several ways in which the crafting rules are a bit confusing and underwhelming.
I see there is a small misunderstanding. You are going with the elf doing 12 hours a day to get 1 and 1/2 days in at a time. (For the record I would allow that as I would allow a reguler person to work double days but I may need save like a forced march. The DC is 10 + 1 for each hour past 8 hours. On a failed saving throw, a character suffers one level of exhaustion.)
This was more a elf doing the adventuring day and while the other slept him doing a 1/2 day of crafting. ie crafting while adventuring . What me and my friend said would be fair is to let a elf do it but add 10% or 1 day what ever is more to each crafting.
