Hey guys, this is my first time creating a full class, so I have no idea whether this is good or not. I used the Fighter class as a template for this class, with the idea coming from the Kings Avatar Anime. Please let me know of any changes I should make to make it more balanced or what I can do to make it better. Thanks.
EDIT: here is the updated link to the hopefully improved Unspecialized Class, again please let me know what to change to make it more balanced where its needed, thanks for you help.
This is probably the most exploitable class devised... but also the easiest class to accidentally build a completely unviable character. It kind of reminds me of the Mime job from Final Fantasy, which is incredibly customizable.
I think in a homebrew-heavy campaign this could work, but it overall feels fairly undercooked. I think it needs stricter rules on spellcasting... As written, a player could take the spellcasting features from both Sorcerer and Bard and get the full benefits of both as they level up. Spellcasting in general is hard to balance with this, since for many classes spellcasting fulfills the function of class features. Every class with built-in spellcasting has several levels where they do not gain any class features, but instead just gain access to a new level of spell slots.
I would recommend giving this class specific subclasses, and the choice of subclass determines some of the things that are harder to balance alongside other class features. For example, you could select "spellcaster" as a subclass at level 1, which unlocks spellcasting and forces the player to select a class to limit their spellcasting to. You could have Martial Combatant at level 1, and only be selecting that specific subclass do you unlock martial weapons and heavy armor (although it's still possible to unlock that feature by taking class features from other classes that unlock the same thing). Then at level 5 Martial Fighter the Subclass feature is always Multi-attack, since everyone is going to be selecting that anyway if they intend to be a attacking.
Although you definitely need to do something with spellcasting, I can see how a subclass that locks you into an archetype at level 1 kind of defeats the whole theme of the class.
As an alternate route, I think you could tie each individual level progression to an archetype. Multiclassing already has a way to calculate spell slots based on caster levels - you could follow this exact structure. Levels where you choose a feature from a spellcasting class would count as casting levels, levels where you choose a martial feature would not progress your casting.
You'd need to consider the pattern in spellcasters where their odd-level features are "you can cast a new level of spells." You should not just get these upgrades for free if you chose Spellcasting at level 1. And of course, you should not be able to take more than one instance of Spellcasting.
I have edited the class please let me know what you think and what will need to be changed I have incorporated your ideas and done the best i can while still giving it the customizable feel that is the class theme.
