So I want to make elemental Bowstrings that would add an additional damage dice to attacks depending on the type of string used. Example: red Bowstrings would add an additional D6 of fire damage to all bow weapons is there a way to make this item work mechanically in dnd beyond or is this something that players would have to remember?
If it isn't something that can be done mechanically can someone point me to the best thread to post this idea to in the hopes of getting implemented
It is not currently possible as such, no. You would have to instruct your players to add a custom action onto their character sheet to roll in addition to rolling their normal damage for the attack. (Just like how Sneak Attack is implemented.)
There’s two reasons:
Since nothing official works that way, the content creation platform (aka homebrewer) hasn’t been programmed to implement it yet. The closest there is to anything like that is Bracers of Archery, but they only add damage as a “fixed number,” not as an additional die, and they just increase the bows’ damage, they cannot add a different damage type. You could just make the bows that each have already been strung, so a bow that adds +1d6 fire damage to itself… but that brings me to the second reason.
The Dice Roller is still in diapers and can’t combine rolls together yet.
What you’re really waiting for (as are many of us, patiently) is for them to finish adding Actions to magic items, and the Dice Roller to get more advanced than it is. Once they add actions to magic items you would be able to make a Wondrous Item with a “special” action that provides the extra 1d6 damage of the appropriate type. Even without the Dice Roller growing up that would at least allow you to create the items with a rollable feature like you want.
You can sortakinda hack it by creating a “cantrip” that just does a flat 1d6 fire damage (with no scaling), and have it set “as part of a weapon attack” and add that to the wondrous item. But they would still have to roll it separately and it would erroneously display as a spell on their sheet, so you would have to be extra clear in your description.

To give feedback to DDB, you can post in this forum: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/d-d-beyond-feedback, and within that forum you can find the official DDB “feature requests” thread: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/d-d-beyond-feedback/30499-request-and-vote-for-new-features-for-ddb
I hope that helps.
