I am a relatively new DM running a game from Explorers guide to Wildemount. I wanted to give my Ranger the Ruin's Wake https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/ruins-wake but as my players pointed out a simple fact I over looked. Spears are a strength based. I intended to give it to the ranger because he is an orc and the throwing return property makes it work well mechanically and thematically
My players haven't identified it yet so I can still make modifications. We ended the session on final blow being dealt to the boss using it. I'm still getting a hang of all the crunchy bits and homebrewing items and have accidentally overpowered my group (except for the ranger). I don't want to give them something that is balanced in the rangers hands but OP in the paladin's hands.
My question: is there any reason to not stick the finesse quality on there so my Ranger can use it. Or to just add a throwing it is Dex property. I've seen posts warning not to add finesse to things over a d6 damage. How do I edit this to suit the ranger without overtly writing his name on it.
It should be fine. After all, the Paladin can already use this and most likely has higher Str than Dex anyway. But remember, this is an Artifact. If your party is lower than, say, 12th level, this will likely be OP.
You could just as easily add the Returning and Finesse properties to a +1 (or +2) javelin and probably make them very happy too. And if you want it a little beefier then also give it Versatile and it would get the 1d8, and still have a better range than the Spear. And if you really, really wanted to give it 3 charges and say on a hit the wielder can expend a charge and roll 3d6 for Hunter’s Mark instead of 1d6 as normal. Then give it a cool name like “Hunter’s Talon” or something.
