Trying to get back into the game haven't played in years. Looking for a fun group with a an experienced DM. Very new to this online play trying to get my feet wet
Game: D&D 5e Group preferred: Online Experience: Played in the 80s for a few years Location/Timezone: Eastern Availability: Sundays and some Sat after 2200 Preferred role: Player Game style: don't know ye
I've run a few campaigns online. Do you know what type of online group you are looking for? Just PbP or Discord or with a VTT? Knowing where you want to spend time can help you find DM's and other players to work with you.
I don't know what online platform is good to start with? I made a character on this site but don't know what platform it can be imported to. Any help would work
Ok! Well it depends on what you really want to look for in a game. This site primarily hosts Play By Post games which are run through the forums and sometimes discord. The character sheet on this site can be used for different online games or in person games depending upon who you play with. A lot of the tools here are to supplement a game itself like the character sheet is useful for in person or discord games but doesn't necessarily integrate with VTT's. Supposedly DDB is going to eventually add a VTT to their products but that's like...a long ways away I think. If you are looking for a game that is run at a set time or set place then you probably want a discord or VTT type of game.
VTT's are places like Roll20, AstralTable, and Fantasy Grounds. Roll20 is free to use website with a chat/voice function that's better than it was 5 years ago, Fantasy Grounds is free as long as your DM has a premium account and you've downloaded the demo program (it is a seperately run program), and I don't know anything about AstralTable. These places tend to also host their own character sheets and materials.
DDB has integration with Discord through Avrae. Discord is a chat/group area that a lot of DnD games get played on instead of/in conjucion with using a VTT as you can run a game by text or voice if you want, and share the materials you need. There are plenty of games that are kind of a hybrid between all three -- VTT, Discord, and PbP. PbP is really useful if you have limited availability as a lot of DMs don't require a set time to post, just ask that you post like once per day or per week sort of thing. It's also easier for some people for whom writing is better than speaking/can give moments to actually think of the words you want to say versus fumbling in a voice setting.
If you don't want to play in a VTT game you can search through DnDBeyond's PbP forum as they have games that are actively recruiting and games that are being actively run there. A thread will be tagged if they are recruiting or not so it makes it easier to find games, and its a good way to look through and just read how some people run PbP style games. Discord games depend upon the groups. Most VTT games you are going to find by either putting up a LFG/LFP post like this or by searching on their specific websites.
Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds can be complex to use to start with. Roll20 can be new user friendly...as long as the DM makes the right selections when setting up a campaign. Most VTT's do have some sort of learning curve. The easiest to get into, and to fall out of, would be a PbP game, as you don't need anything but a way to roll dice and record then numbers (which DDB has integrated into their forums, or if your using discord integrated through avrae), and otherwise you just have to have easy access to your character sheet.
It really depends on what you want to try out. There's...a lot out of there.
