Not played it ages but might dust off my old Runequest books (I have the 3rd edition books from when I started rpg-ing) and see what the latest edition looks like
Dungeon Crawl Classics, best RPG out there. Its got elements of the basic set and 3rd edition. Do you want to fly a pterodactyl to the moon to save the world, you can do it in here.
For space adventures - Traveller for generic make your own superhero’s - Champions for distopian future with magic - Shadowrun for distopian future with cars - car wars GURPS is really more of a system with multiple possibilities for the type of game you want.
There are a ton of choices out there and it really aught to be said that just about any game can be awesome if you have the right GM and the right party. The best system in the world will fail if the players are shite.
That being said, I love Shadowrun, Paladium games (RIFTS, TMNT, Robotech, Mechanoids, Fantasy), HERO Games (Champions, Fantasy HERO), Villains and Vigilantes, Gamma World!
Never did the RPG bit on Car Wars but it is a fantastic war game.
GURPS can be fun but be ready to die. It has a lot of granularity but it is so lethal.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
The silver lining for me personally in The Debacle is that I'm probably gonna get to play a bunch of the non-dnd games I've been wanting to try for ages. I've got a core group that I play with and, while they love playing, they're not as nerdtastic about the breadth of the hobby as I am. So it's been a bit of an uphill battle introducing alternative systems.
They are however just as appalled by The Debacle as I am and so discussion of alternatives is suddenly thriving!
No idea if this personal dynamic I'm experiencing is common enough throughout the wider community to help keep some designers and artists afloat through the coming storm, but here's hoping!
But I would like to see a generic form of Gamma World. I think if the core rules are written correctly they could cross over to setting like Marvel Heroes and other mutant games. Maybe even into the Japanese anime end of things. No magic but all psionic effects.
If WotC tried this out I truly think they would just mess it all up.
Hey all,
For the many of us who won't be playing the world's "greatest" rpg soon, what are some other great games y'all recommend?
Personally, I'm dying to try the following:
- Blades in the Dark
- Pathfinder 2e (hopefully they get themselves out from the OGL)
- Worlds Without Number / Stars Without Number
- Knave
- Mork Borg
What are y'all looking forward to playing? What have you already played that you'd recommend?
GURPs seems cool. That being said, D&D is cooler and I'm not gonna let myself be pushed away from it over some unverified rumors.
BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!

For more fantasy stuff:
- Pathfinder 2E

I just picked up Call of Cthulhu which is a 40 year old game, but gets rave reviews. Just be aware, it's not a D&D style RPG.
GURPS (noted above) has been around since the 80s too and was quite popular.
Forbidden Lands is another I'm looking at.
Tunnels and Trolls was one from long ago
Rifts was another one.
There are a ton of them out there and now a whole host of new ones coming around in major part due to this OGL 1.1 fiasco.
Info, Inflow, Overload. Knowledge Black Hole Imminent!

I will always recommend Sharowrun, it’s my favorite. I’m also a big fan of the World of Darkness franchise, but I haven’t played the current edition.
PS- A friend of mine would strongly recommend both Champions & Savage Worlds (his favorites) and Call of Cthulhu.

We are loving shadows of brimstone but that's more of a wild west horror game but it's super addictive
I share this for the sake of sharing to further broadened folks RPG experiences and not as comment on the current 'situation'.
Here's a list of systems I've played and enjoyed, in the order they popped into my brain:
System I have but haven't played, but want to play :-D:
Those are the ones I can think of at the moment.
Take care,

Check out Castles and Crusades. The 7th edition Players Handbook PDF is free right now. gary Gygax worked for Troll Lord Games before he passed away.

Masks - teenage superhero
Scum and Villainy - Star Wars, Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, etc. aka Blades in the Dark in space
Monster of the Week - its in the name
I loved Car Wars.

A few I've gotten into recently.
Lancer. Lots of mechs, very customizable, very fun! Lots of cool lore in a more grounded sci-fi world.
ICON. A Breath of the Wild, Final Fantasy style fantasy game. Made by the same guys as Lancer.
Scion. Urban fantasy style, all gods and myths are real. For all you Percy Jackson and mythology lovers.
And of course, Pathfinder 2e.
These are just a few I've been looking into and been having fun with recently, and I hope these recommendations are useful to you all!
Mutant Crawl Classics might be up your alley.
