question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game
I don't know if I had a mentor. The two people who introduced me to Dnd didn't explain the rules at all and one of them was actually playing pathfinder and calling it Dnd. I eventually had to teach myself and I pretty much taught my first real DM as we played. My first real game with an experienced player who knew a good deal about the game was DMed by my pastor and he did a great job so he would probably be the closest thing to a Dnd mentor.
If you had told me I would spend my day looking up the density of assorted materials and doing math so that I could figure out what sort of a shipping object they would be in , i would have laughed at you.
ANd yet…
Trade goods are a freaking nightmare, and I still have “crafting materials” to do. On the other hand, I can now say that a Crom of gold ore weighs 162 pounds and is worth less than 30 ingots which are a form of minted metal weigh 5 pounds each and equal to 175 coins. A crom is roughly 5000 ml, or about 1.32 gallons. Which is also the size of gallons on my world (yes, I have a whole measuring system Why do think I am hurting myself figuring all this math out?).
A crom is used pretty much for ore only. ANd yes, it is that Crom. I needed a name fast and that was what popped in my head.
I also know how much a square yard of material weighs, so now I can tell you how heavy that bolt of fabric in the corner of the treasure room is.
Thankfully, I only have to do this once, lol.

As I understand things, they don’t allow you to publish new worlds (though I may be wrong).
They do not, no. Anything published on DM’s Guild must either fit into one of the pre approved settings or be setting agnostic. However, I believe you can on Drive Through RPG. (I think.)

I've just reviewed their publishing rules recently and from what I remember, yes, you can publish that sort of thing on Drive Through.
Sadly, I don't think we can publish this on DM's Guild.
For now, DMsGuild is limited to the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Eberron, Ravnica, Theros, Arcavios(Strixhaven), Spelljammer, and Dragonlance and other current 5e settings only (Exandria excluded), although you can also publish anything for 5th Edition that (i) is generic enough to be used in a permitted setting without effort and (ii) doesn’t explicitly use anything related to another official Wizards setting.
Yeah, all of you are right. I never truly read the DM's guild rules, only browsed through looking for interesting products. I would say my mentor has been my DM's through various online groups who had way more experience than me and had been playing for years, when I had only started a few years ago. Jill taught me how to optimize, Carlos teamwork, and Andrew how to roleplay and make connections with other party members. I still play with Carlos and Andrew in our weekly online games. I might as well list my chars in their games:
1. Coil, An eladrin sorcerer in Carlos's campaign in Ebberon. every long rest their season randomly changed and with it they multiclassed into a new class, spring was glamour bard, summer wild magic barbarian, autumn peace cleric, and winter fathomless warlock. so essentialy I have to make and keep track of 4 char sheets.
2. Lady Theromnac, an owlin monk/warlock who is the long lost mother of one of the other players character and has been taken over by an alien parasite. me and the other player recently stole a baby dragon while our morally questionable fiend warlock accomplice brutally murdered the parents.
and because I’m that guy, question of the day: What is your favorite current character, or for those forever DMs (*cough* AEDorsay *cough*) what’s your favorite npc?

Generally sssspeaking, my favorite NPssssssC is a very, very old, short, wrinkled to hell and back, massive head of white fluffy hair, no teeth due named The Great Wazoo.
Wazoo sssspeakssss with a whissstly sssibilancccee and lots of pauses, in an accent that is best described as a really bad take on cowboy character actors, lol.
Wazoo has been in every campaign I have run since 1981, usually making only a single appearance. Usually he acts as a quest giver or Sage.
Second favorite is Marty. Just Marty. Marty is retired now, but in the old days when adventurers could go to a single shop and buy just about anything, he was the proprietor of said shop, with franchises all over the place. Marty has an unusual gift: his Speed is 968. That works out to about 110 mph, for those wondering. Marty is never still, is twitchy, and talks very, very fast.
Third would be whatever character is occupying the world weary, seen it all, bored out of her mind, cynical role. FOr Wyrlde, that’s Chicory, who is so damn tired of the other gods that she basically said “screw them all, just don’t mess up my stuff”. Her stuff is, of course, the entire world, because she is the Anima Mundi, but meh.
EDIT; So, I was working on equipment tables, and because it has import thought I would start working on the basics of a “better” vehicle combat system and environmental travel, and that in turn led me to need to know wind, wave, and other features and all of that combined led to me adapting and “improving” my extreme temperatures stuff and so now I have a whole set of rules based off 5e stuff for outdoor adventuring with vehicles, mounts, and on foot that also includes a whole speed and distance table with the traditional Speed measurement (Speed of 1 = 10 feet of movement in one round) that converts it all to miles per hour and per day with all the natural hazards except for floods, because floods are a nightmare and I dun wanna.
But the Train, which travels 250 miles a day, now has a known Speed of 83 to 85, and I can develop out combat rules for “high speed strikes” and “collisions”. Yay. Go me. I only have a deadline of November 30th. Easy Peary, right *sobs*

I currently only have one active character who I am growing to like more but he isn't my favorite character. He is a warforged lore bard in a homebrew world set in a post-apocalyptic Earth filled with magic and mayhem. He collects and records ancient lore and forgotten secrets, aka tapes, cassettes, and record players which he has built into his chest. He plays these ancient artifacts to cast his spells and inspire his allies.
question of the day: What is your favorite current character, or for those forever DMs (*cough* AEDorsay *cough*) what’s your favorite npc?
My favorite player character would be: Braid Lockpick. He was a Kender I got to play way back in 2nd Edition D&D. I didn't play him as a "clepto" as everyone thinks that Kender need to be played as. I worked with my DM to create a "random assortment of things" I had in my bag that I would roll on. The game ran like two years, but he was quite fun to play. Tried to bring him back for the current 5e Dragonlance game, but someone had an idea for a (non Kender) rogue - so I fell back on my second idea, a human, white robed Wizard from Solamnia. Which has been quite fun (though this past weekend when we played, everything was being killed before I could do much so it was a lot of Frost Bolt).
My favorite NPC(s)... There's technically four. The "OG" favorite NPC was someone the players dubbed as "Free" - he was a human, who'd been a slave to the drow - who was gifted with incredible knowledge about these star fragments that came to the world and needed to be "fixed." (Sometimes before sessions, I'd google random facts about the cosmos and have him mutter about it... or sometimes, even facts about flowers, or birds, or something). However, the knowledge proved to be too much, so his sanity had broke in the process. So he rambled a lot and tagged a long to help the players gather the fragments. But he always blabbed and would often get into trouble but mysteriously also get out of it (thus his name). While fun to play way back when (this was like ... 2003?), he was, over all, pretty shallow.
In my current game I call the "off week" game - I've talked about it in this thread - but it's heavy RP. And so one of the players wanted to do a "dating connection" game for the sole female in the party - and the patrons agreed - and we literally did a "love connection" type scenario - and rather than me always answering as the NPCs - I would call on the other players - at random to answer the questions. Created a fun environment. But two of the characters from that were Kavium - a paladin who follows the goddess of sexuality, and Waesyn - who I voiced after Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kavium won one of the dates, picked by the female player, and while on their dates (which lasted many sessions, because they were always getting into trouble/adventuring) - he was fun because he was always very "Joey" from Friends. "How you doin'?" kind thing, and she always brushed him off which was so great. (There was one time she'd said something and I joked, "Kavium is taking psychic damage from Galiena!") When he'd do Lay on Hands on Galiena, he'd say, "I can heal your body and soul!" And she'd be like, "Now is not the time, Kavium!" And he'd be like, "Right. Maybe after the Sahuagin fight."
This game was only me, and three others - and so when one of them dropped - the tanky player - I brought Waesyn back into the fold, who the party already interacted with several times (to fill in on the tanky side) - and I have been using Arnold quotes left and right ("Come with me if you want to live!" is the most common one). And every time I speak as him I do my Arnold impression.
Edit - Forgot to mention the fourth. The fourth would be an Earth Genasi. In my main game (runs opposite Tuesday as my off week game), the party is trying to put a stop to a Beholder who has gained the knowledge on how to ascend into Godhood - and in the chase, have come to the Planes (Earth, Fire, Water, and Air) - currently they're on Earth - and encountered some Earth Genasi rebels who are fighting Githyanki (which in my world have a very different lore than D&D) - and they met one named Terra. (I believe I posted a link to audio clip from one of my sessions a few pages? back). She's been fun because the Paladin in the party is always super cautious - but she's very brash and always egging the Paladin on - to the point where he's now rushing into battle with her because she keeps calling him out. She's been very fun.
So they've been fun, both for me, and the players, who have often gone out of their way when these NPCs get wounded, to try and save them.
Favorite NPC:: Kaddish - Bugbear Hunter ranger L4 - https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/wcwilson82355_85549483.pdf he is the party’s walking treasury and meat shield. When ever they find magic they can’t use/ don’t want they give it to Kaddish to carry/wear/use. The party is all L5 and consists of a high elf male psi warrior fighter, a human female lore bard ( the biggest tease ever), a male Dhampire soulknife rogue4/ Fighter 1, a female fairy hexblade warlock, a human male champion fighter.

The stories were cool. It's also neat that - because we're in the Adohand's Kitchen section - we can let the conversation flow semi-naturally without having to constantly worry about turrning it back into a discussion about D&D.
