Idk what world you’re in, but saying merry Christmas before Christmas is not considered odd. For instance, last week I had my last guitar lesson before the holidays, so my teacher was like, “bye, merry Christmas” or something along those lines. Workers might say “happy holidays” as instead of the usual have a good day at a checkout Christmas week, etc.
infact, I would call it the standard. Unless it’s the actual day though it’s just a farewell, not a greeting
even thanksgiving. Obviously you wouldn’t just say happy thanksgiving on a random Wednesday, but if it was happening that week you might use it as a farewell, especially to people you won’t see until after the holiday

If you don’t intend on seeing that person until the holidays are over (ie. a teacher or coworker who you don’t interact with outside of work) then yeah, it’s reasonable, though “have a good Christmas(break)” is more reasonable and accurate. Now saying merry Christmas to someone you have a good chance of seeing again, is very strange. Especially if it’s the first thing you do on the day directly before Christmas, which y’know, has its own name. But Would you not find it strange if someone saw you in the morning and said happy birthday the day before?
