Hidden deep in the Arizona Desert, there's a forbidden stretch of sand known simply as the Devil's Palm. It is said that the land itself is cursed, though at the very heart of it you may find a small, abandoned mining town called Marino, the only bastion of light within the darkness. It used to be a populous village that sprung up as travellers heading towards California settled down early after their ordeals and the desert, led here by the great gold rush that ended 35 years prior to now; 1890. But, the desert was harsh to this town, and now all that remains of the place is the hollow shells of weathered wood structures, the lazy tumbleweeds, and the old saloon, with it's creaking sign outside reading Pandora's Box.
Whether you found your way to the saloon intentionally, or got lost in the disorienting deserts passing through on a race or what have you, before being spun around senseless until you managed to somehow land here through sheer luck, your journey will have left scars. The evil spirits in the Devil's Palm are akin to latching onto travellers; these demons could be formless yet nagging, or appear as a humanoid figure standing behind you, or even any type of item or design, but the one thing these ghosts share is that they grant their vessel a power, which will stay with you no matter if it helps or hinders, and binds you to the other cursed, allowing you to see their spirits too.
Inside the saloon, the dusty shelves are crammed with all manner of curious trinkets; from old ship's logs to long, decorated scrolls, shards of regal crowns and broken pocket watches, sun-dried tomatoes and strawberries on a ledge, ornate twisting sapphire dreamcatchers, an umbrella stand with no umbrella to be seen, a bottle swirling with sand, coiling purple ferns upon an old wooden katana, and mounted on the wall behind the bar, above all, rusted and glinting, is a bizarre arrow.
The barkeep chuckles to himself often, even when no one's there, and occasionally muses about how he think's he's the only bit of hope left within the Box, and all the evil has been released outwards into the Palm around the town, though reckons if he draws enough cursed in to shelter and recover in the tavern, the spirits might not be so restless. They do seem to tug and pull towards each other's company, after all. His name is Victor Scattleton, and he will be your host for what might be the rest of your life, since as you all know, crossing into the centre of the Devil's Palm is a near impossible adventure, but crossing back out would be suicide....
Okay, with that lore out of the way, welcome to The Long, Roundabout Path, a wild west, supernatural tavern thread where you roleplay as lost souls, likely burdened with an evil spirit who hitched a ride on your journey, giving you a boon in exchange. The main tavern is Pandora's Box, though the town of Marino has several other abandoned buildings that you may be interested in exploring or even renovating. There are very few rules at all on character creation, only that the characters must be human, their spirit power (if they have one) is not overpowered (if you're unsure at all, ask a mod) and that the spirit's appearance and power is detailed and clear for other players. General thread rules apply and always to remember to roleplay in good faith, which means no arguing, bullying, inappropriate topics (i.e anything more than PG-13) or unnecessary character violence. Breaking these rules will result in you being thrown out into the desert to be eaten by coyotes and evil spirits.
I'm likely to update things as we go and possibly change elements of this thread depending on player feedback, we'll just see how we go and where we get to depending on how this thread works out! With that, welcome, and have fun!
*1. FINALLY MORE WID WEST! 2. Arigatō Gyro…Hontōni hontōni, nante tōi mawari michi (Johnny Joestar theme beings to play) and 3. A way to experience Joojo’s without Jojo’s. Pretty smart of you Shiver. I’ll work on a character. Also, by lost souls, do you mean lost people, or lost dead people?*

Yo I’m Himy (He/Him) (pronounced exactly as written for those who are wondering) I'm adhd and exhibit high antisocial tendencies, so bear with me if I seem apathetic. I like reading, watching anime, playing video games, and questioning my morality. I don't rp as much as I used to, but I'm almost aways on Onions or LCW. Always willing to chat. That’s all folks!

Thanks, I got to work on thinking on it as soon as the A Bizarre Adventure threads ended, this is pretty much a Jojo thread but entirely de-Jojofied. You could say it’s a reference… 4. The spirit(s)? takes the appearance of a being split in half. It’s left half looking like traditional depictions of Death, a skeleton in a black cloak, it’s eyes burning with blue light, when you look into them, it’s like you’re hearing the screams of the damned. Its other half takes the appearance of an angel, with pale white skin, golden hair and shining eyes, in which you hear the singing of a holy choir. Note that both sides have wings, one being black and the other white. Now, as for power, they have the power of reversal. They can make it so when you want to go forward, you walk backwards, when you want to jump, you crouch down. This also can be applied to damage, where healing hurts and hurting heals.*

[It's really good though whether or not you've seen it has absolutely no influence on this thread at all; any Jojo stuff is simply a reference and isn't important whatsoever]
*I kind of want to join this, but I need to come up with at least a basic character concept to start with.*
honestly i kinda want to just join this and become ned flanders for some reason
*Remember to respect the thread creator and other players.*
so no ned flanders then?
[If you play him as an original character distinct from the inspiration (i.e adapted to the setting) and at least partially seriously then I'm happy, so as long as he isn't entirely a gag character or is just directly himself from the Simpsons then he should be good!]

A tall and lanky man wearing a 3 piece suit and a blindfold enters the saloon. His hair is long and kept very well, though it's naturally curly. On his back rests a massive and seemingly undwieldy black spoon with a serrated edge and a sharped edge. The sharpened portions of the edge are silver, and there are many scratches covering the surface of the entire weapon. He seems foreign, as he is quite pale.
