You would be surprised what lurks outside of the human world. All manner of darkness and delirium lingers at the cusp of the Mortal Realm, and only needs one ingredient to step through that veil. A soul.
Welcome to ✦ The Beings Within ✦, a thread set in a world very similar to this one, yet just beneath the surface, you can find that there's usually more to somebody than what meets the eye. Countless dark beings dwell beyond the scope of mortal comprehension, and to break free from whatever realm of horror they originate from, they just need the soul of a human host to latch onto. Acting as a vessel, the human might never realise that they're sharing a body with a sinister parasite, and most never do, but when somebody takes the time to question the strange voices in their head, or delves deeper into their new habit of sleepwalking, that's when the symbiotic relationship becomes more clear, and the inscrutable answer to the age-old mystery of what can be found in the darkness starts to unravel and reveal itself.
You are a host to a non-human entity. Examples of this entity could include but are not limited to: A ghost, a demon/yokai, an alien symbiote or transferred consciousness, a twisted god, an alter ego brought on by vampirism, ghouldom or lycanthropy, a sentient disease or fungal infection, an embodiment of the void or an eldritch being, with other suggestions encouraged and welcome. As long as it's got a mind to think and a reason to latch onto you, it has no problem binding with your soul in a typically unwilling and sacrilegious union.
Rules are as followed!
- Stick to forum rules, of course - Roleplay in good faith - No OP usage of characters (not to be confused with no OP characters; you're fully welcome to have a character who's the vessel of a god, but since this relationship likely isn't agreed upon, the character might have significant limits on how much of their symbiote's power they can access. If you've got any questions or doubts, ask a mod!) - Name your favourite piece of supernatural fiction in your first post so I know you've read the rules -Cut quote chains when they reach the fifth post at a maximum, and if only two people are roleplaying at one time, refrain from using them unless necessary - Read the short paragraph on the Soul Ownership stat below - Have fun!
Soul Ownership:
[Loosely inspired by the Nightmare Shift by Baazleboop]
Your character has a special stat, called their Soul Ownership, which is a number from 1-10. The higher a character's Soul Ownership is, the more of a hold they have on their soul, meaning they can hide their symbiote better, and have higher resistance to the magic or attacks of other symbiotes, seeing as they are more grounded in reality. However, the lower your Soul Ownership is, the more power your symbiote can draw from it, and so they can grant you more potent magic and take control over your body easier. To counteract this power boost, lower Soul Ownership means you'll also take more damage from the magic or attacks of other symbiotes, since your grip on your soul is more loose and so therefore it's more vulnerable to otherworldly attack. Consider how your character got their symbiote in the first place when gauging their Soul Ownership. Characters with a low score likely had their symbiote latch onto them unknowingly, whereas characters with higher scores might have sold their soul or at least partially agreed to let the symbiote take hold.
*I actually have some amazing characters for this, but I don't know if I've got a favorite piece of media, Bioshock is a good one. Also, Shiver, the campaign needs you.*

[It's up to you guys but I think an urban area would work well, since you're having to hide your symbiote more but it also means you've got a lot more options of things to do]
[I started watching Tokyo Ghoul recently which was one of the main inspirations for this, mixed in with other typical possession/vessel stuff like Dandadan or Hollow Knight, so if you ever need any inspirations for characters, I'd look towards them! I'm glad to see so many people interested too!]

*alright, modern day sounds good!*
*here’s my basic idea*
Nyarlathotep, the crawling chaos with a thousand faces, can take myriad forms in its attempts to bring humanity closer to the ever hungering maws of the Outer Gods. One of these forms was discovered in 1833 by a professor at Oxford. It was a hypothetical quantum equation dubbed, ‘the Kruschyta Equation,’ and it is said that it has yet to be solved, by any human or computer. It is so complex that the professor who discovered it spent the rest of his long life trying to solve it. Now, it is mostly forgotten, only found in a few old textbooks and only talked about in late night conversation between mathematicians. Only, occasionally, someone actually tries to solve the Kruschyta equation.
it consumes every free space in their mind. They become obsessed with solving it, to a point that it practically possesses them, forcing them to work day in and day out to work on the solution. This can make them develop some… interesting quirks, magical abilities, some may call it. The real danger, however, is if someone actually ever manages to solve it.
the Kruschyta equation, in its entirety, is a ritual to summon an avatar of Nyarlathotep.

[That's awesome, I absolutely love it, I didn't even think about less direct methods of possession like that but it's awesome, that's given me so many other ideas too, great job!]

*thanks! I know I wanted to do something related to the Cthulhu mythos, wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the King in Yellow (the most interesting of the great old ones) or the Kruschyta equation, but I thought the Kruschyta equation would be better since the King in Yellow is already a widespread idea.*
A young man gets out of a red Cadillac, pulling a black suitcase. He looks somewhat weary, and he is dressed in white scrubs with a white jacket over the top.
Down the street from the man, a stranger, about university age, is walking down the street towards him, clutching his left forearm and wincing. Through gritted teeth he mutters to himself 'You said you would make me stronger...how could he still hurt me?.' He continues to walk on for a while in silence until he says 'Yeah, well I don't care if I beat him, it's not strong enough. Heal the wound and get me stronger.' Almost as soon as the words have left his mouth, he seems to get his wish, as he draws his hand away to reveal a long knife wound closing up as golden fiddle strings spring from his skin to stitch the wound shut, and then healing over with raw, red, but healthy flesh. The man flexes his reinvigorated arm a few times to test it, but to his horror soon realises that the process isn't finished, as the red flesh continues to sprout forth from the scar in great clumped veins down his arm. The man's words catch in his throat as this occurs, and he can only manage shout for it to stop when a grotesque, bloodshot and yellowed eyeball begins to grow out the back of his palm, the eyelids peeling open with a hiss of sulphurous steam. At his cry, the hellish flesh retreats away back into his body, and his arm is left healed with no further consequences, but he is still fairly shaken, and mutters 'I...think I'm good now. Thanks.'
