DM: "No. I'm not allowing you to play a Mind Flayer." Player: "We're called Illithids." DM: "Whatever. You're still not playing one. We're starting with level 1. You want a character based on a CR7 Aberration." Player: "I cast Dominate Monster on the DM, you monster." DM: "Sure. Why not? What's your Spell Save DC?" Player: "I don't have one yet. You won't let me create the character." DM: "Then, I automatically succeed."
(Note: Monster is sometimes used interchangeably with Creature to mean that it affects anything - Beasts, Humanoids, Dragonkin, Aberrations... anything vulnerable to the effect. The spell above specifies "Creature" despite the spell name.)

The party is infiltrating Vanthampur Manor. They just got out of the dungeon, after killing Duchess Vanthampur and her son, finding the puzzle cube and shield of the hidden lord. An NPC that is with them alerts them that they should leave the building stealthily, to not raise suspicion from the mercenaries hired as guards. The important party member is the Wizard, a Hobgoblin Necromancer wielding the Shield of the Hidden Lord (took the Medium Armored feat, so they can have shields and have medium armor).
Rogue: Okay, let me go ahead and scout things out. Party: Sounds like a plan. DM: You see the guards, all blocking the southern gate. The rogue then comes back to report this finding to the party. Wizard: Are they all in a line? Rogue: Yes. Why? The wizard goes outside and casts wall of fire from the shield around the guards, trapping them in a ring of fire that then kills them due to its heat. It partially touches the manor, lighting it on fire and beginning to burn it down. The party then dashes out of the burning building and runs through the gates. Rogue: WELL, so much for stealth!

I can so gel with this - like the time Tylas had to convince a dryad to do what he asked her to do so he could look like he was a devil's chosen, and barely managed to convince her to do so with a 22 Cha (persuasion) check. Some characters just hate each other.
Replying to all of these now it seems... Do I want to know the situation in which this was said? No - don't tell me, I'm guessing it involves planes and devils/demons, no?

I'd totally allow someone to play a mind flayer. I'm making a race template for them in my homebrew world.

Rogues are great. Stealth is great. Wizards are great. Rogues+Stealth+Wizards = sticky disaster.
