I came for a fight, and instead I got murdered with no way to protect myself or fight back. I was thinking that I could use the Witch, a nearly debuff-only class, to eke out a win, but that didn't work at all.

DnD is not a balanced game, homebrew or not, and you wanted to play around with builds. I see combat as a form of roleplay where the characters get to show off their abilities, and that's why I fight. We came looking for different experiences.
