They seemed to be the unique ID# for each roll. So 111111 would be #1 - 111112 would be #2 - 666666 would be #46,656 and so on.
...how did he find out though? was the roller broken?

Probably calculated it. Fairly easy to do. It would be:
(7776*(d1-1)) + (1296*(d2-1)) + (216*(d3-1)) + (36*(d4-1)) + (6*(d5-1)) + d6
or simplified to:
7776(d1) + 1296(d2) + 216(d3) + 36(d4) + 6(d5) + d6 - 9330.
Essentially it's converting the Senary (base6) number of the result into decimal. That's where the -1 comes from on each roll because in Senary it's 0-5 not 1-6.
