It seems to me like they take the original movie plot and simplified it to the Hollywood standard, and hire a pretty and know face as the main character as hook for who don't know about the anime or manga.
I've heard it will lean a little toward Blade Runner in some respects, which is a huge compliment. I also think she's well cast from the bits and pieces I've gathered.
Maybe it will be super awesome. Maybe not. Time will tell.
