As a fun fact I learned there's a patron saint for unattractive people. (St. Drogo)
That's my patron saint right there
Lol
Vitus, out of curiosity, how many patron saints can you name?
Toughy. Since I know more saints than knowing their patronages. And in some cases I have a guess of what they *could* be patron saint of without knowing for sure. So gonna go for the ones I'm sure of.
St. Vitus, patron saint of comedians, epilepsy, oversleeping, Prague (?), protection against storms (?) etc. (He's my confirmation saint so I've looked at him more.) St. Thomas Aquinas, guessing he's a patron saint of theologians, I know he's also the patron saint of pencil makers (random factoid that stuck with me) St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland St. Lawrence, patron saint of comedians and of cooks (got martyred by being roasted alive and was like, "Turn me over. I am done on this side!") St. Dymphna, patron saint of metal health St. Jude, patron saint of lost causes St. Philomena (had to look up her name; we actually talked about her at my church group Wednesday), patron saint of lost causes too St. Blaise, patron saint of throat ailments St. Anthony of Padua, patron saint of finding lost things St. Bonaventure, patron of bowel issues I know more but those are at the top of my head
Some interesting ones I also like St. Augustine, had a bit of a wild youth and then was a major theologian of the early Church St. Athanasias was big in defending the Incarnation and got exiled a few times for defending orthodoxy. St. Polycarp knew St. John the Apostle (haven't read him yet; but want to one of these days) Sts. Cyril and Methodius developed the basis for the Cyrillic alphabet to preach to the Slavs St. Mary of Egypt had perhaps an even wilder time before converting St. Moses the Black went from being a robber thug to a merciful promoter of peace San Juan Diego was at the center of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe St. Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take another man's place at Auschwitz St. Bartolo Longo went from being a satanic priest to being a promoter of the Rosary St. Carlo Acutis was a modern teen
...
If St. Jude is patron saint of lost causes, then that has very dark implications for St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital :'(
That's very sad

I feel like you don't want to do that...since, of course, the person who named it most likely was a researcher who saved hundreds, if not thousands, of lives.
but...I see what you mean

I’m pretty sure that patron saints are supposed to be like protectors. So anyway who falls under their umbrella of patronage is supposed to be safe. Like how a patron Saint of storms isn’t making one, instead protecting those who are in storms. So, St.Jude would be a protecter for something deemed a lost cause. Kinda like a symbol to keep pushing forward regardless of how hopeless things may seem
But I ain’t catholic so I could very well be completely and utterly wrong
Edit: After a quick google search, he also seems to be the patron of hospitals and desperate situations, which makes even more sense, considering that being that sick is an incredibly desperate situation
Yo, I’m Himy, He/Him. I enjoy reading books, understanding why and how things work, anime/manga, video games and obviously, TTRPGS. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I like to think Im close. I’m good at trivia, history and science
I struggle with empathy. If you’re not sure what I mean by that, it basically means it’s hard for me to understand the mental state of others and respond with the right emotions

So after some quick googling, turns out the story is much more wholesome
So this guy named Danny Thomas was a down on his luck comedian. He was practically flat broke and was about to have his first child. He went, emptied out his wallet in offerings (7 dollars, or about 150 dollars today) and prayed to Saint Jude for intervention (Since he’s the patron of desperate situations and lost causes, something that Danny was definitely feeling at the moment) A week later, he landed a gig that paid 10 times the initial offering. Yet again, he prayed to St. Jude, that if had success in life, that he promised that would build a shrine in his honor. And he struck it big time. Ended up with a whole show. So he made good on his promise. Built an entire hospital (which he was also the patron Saint of apparently) with the money from his show in St. Jude’s honor.
So yeah, it wasn’t really about being a lost cause for the people there. The guy who built it was desperate, and he didn’t want others to feel that way to. He had a child on the way, so he knew that a parent’s primary concern would be the safety of their children. He made sure that parents wouldn’t feel so desperate. That they wouldn’t think it was a lost cause. And I think that’s pretty neat.

I also got to have a nice little moment. Let's establish some characters.
Alice and John are engaged. Tyler is Alice's brother.
On the topic of praying for the wrong thing Alice mentions how back in highschool she kept praying for some of the guys to be her boyfriend and that she's so glad that wasn't answered because it wouldn't have been good for her.
So later I'm talking with Tyler and am like, "You know how your sister was mentioning unanswered prayers for the best, it's a good thing she knows John. I'm sure he has a friend he could introduce her to."
