Imprisonment, is my favorite spell. I'm here to tell you why it's my favorite, and convince you that it should be yours.
Power/Usefulness
so getting to 17th level (the minimum level you can be to cast 9th level spells, and therefore cast Imprisonment) is rare and unlikely, most campaigns don't get that far. but when you do, it can be a great choice. compare it to power word kill. both Imprisonment and power word kill will get rid of your enemy, probably Imprisonment requires a save, whereas power word kill does not. however, with a high save DC, a target out of legendary resistances, and possibly the help of a portent, you can avoid the target succeeding the save. power word kill however, requires the target to be at 100 hit points or fewer left! this means a lengthy battle before being able to get rid of the enemy, where Imprisonment only requires getting rid of legendary resistances.
secondly, Imprisonment does not kill the target, where spells like power word kill andmeteor swarm certainly will. this can be useful if your character does not want to kill anyone. or, if you think the creature maybe be useful later. maybe you want to go with the chains option so you can talk to, and possibly get advise from later. or maybe your casting Imprisonment, not on an enemy, but a terrible beast that destroys everything in sight, who you will release later to destroy an enemy or area.
lastly, although creatures under Imprisonment could escape, if you guard against this appropriately, it's more unlikely that a dead enemy returning to life. with access to spells like true Resurrection, which most bosses this late game will have, they could easily be returned back to life. and some creatures, (vampires and demons lords for example) constantly resurrect themselves when killed. this would not help them escape an Imprisonment.
Flavor
ok, so it's powerful. the thing is, dnd is not about power. and even if it was, Imprisonment, although powerful, is not he most powerful 9th level spell, true polymorph and wish are even more powerful. but, Imprisonment is so cool and flavorful. flavor is very much personal opinion, but just think about it, how cool is it to just permanently imprison and enemy?
DM Plots
honestly, it's very unlikely you (if your a PC) will ever get high enough level to learn Imprisonment, or any other 9th level spells. however, Imprisonment can make a great plot basis. the legendary monster is escaping it's Imprisonment cast by a wizard long ago, and must be stopped!
World Building
I mean, think about it: what world doesn't have an ancient evil imprisoned?
