we need to figure out exactly what darklings can do.

Maybe they can spend 10 minutes doing a ritual once every 3 days, to sort of shadow jump up to 10 miles.
this could give them a level of exhaustion, like nico di Angelo from Percy Jackson, who could travel through shadows at the cost of him possibly passing out or dying if the distance is too far.
