What’s your idea?
What about a creature that lives in attics and closets and other dark places that gives people nightmares and collects the tears they shed in their sleep to . . . do something with them? It's like a bogeyman sort of but not necessarily out to physically hurt anyone.

It's got an ability to deal psychic damage or something, like a cantrip-based attack.

Hmmm… it could drink their tears. Or maybe they serve an archfey that needs them for some reason?
they could also influence emotions to cause disputes and fights. Maybe they feed off of the sadness in tears, and they grow more powerful if it fed on sadness recently. Maybe some of them prefer different types Of sadness?
they could be called either tear drinkers or Hate sowers.
Oooooooh they could have subtypes that feed off of different types of dreams. The very good ones could cause daydreams/happy dreams, the not-so-good ones could cause nightmares and such.

What if they could sort of crystallize emotions and plant them as seeds. The seeds then become trees with a small hollow in it. In 1 year and a day, a new one of them is born, and it has the same dream preference as the one who made the seed.
That's a good idea, it's like the encode thoughts spell but for dreams, sort of.

They could cast detect thoughts, advantage if the target is sleeping.

And they could be undetectable while doing so. What if they could also break these crystalized dreams to make a psychic explosion that deals extra damage depending on the type of dream. Good= psychic + radiant, neutral = just psychic, and nightmare means psychic+ necrotic. What if they can establish a connection with people through their dreams and come back from the dead as long as their tree and a person they established a connection with survive.

Completely undetectable by any means short of a ninth level truesight or a wish spell, and you can’t notice they are reading your thoughts. They should also know the dream spell.
I agree. I'm beginning to think they should be just powerful AF but not really evil or good. They're like whills or whatever in Star Wars. Or sort of like Time Lords. Or something.

They could sort of be creatures made by an archfey who controls dreams to make sure that they work properly. Maybe individuals claim cities to monitor and they deliver dreams based on what happened and what the person would be dreaming about. And they create weaker, less fed minions with the crystalized memories to help. So if there aren’t any in an area, creatures never have natural dreams except for very specific circumstances, like divine messages in the shape of dreams.
