I imagine he realized what he had become, and deep down he hated it, so when he got an opportunity he just walked down a shadow road, not caring where he ended up. I know very little about the setting, so I'm thinking he spent a few months hunting fairy-tale monsters (his life goal is to feast on unicorn) before getting drawn into a sort of monster hunter's guild (probably run by regular DnD pixies from another plane, they sound like they'd do that). That was how he got to the city. I don't know anything about the city, but a monster hunter's guild sounds simple enough.

A Quickstep Ranger, don't know the name yet. Also it doesn't have to be a Quickstep, could be any race idc as long as it's racial features and asi's fits with ranger.
I had a brother. A twin, to be specific. He and I were inseparable, until he was killed. They blamed it on me. They all blamed it on me, but I know what I saw. It looked like me, I assume it was some kind of shapeshifter, and it murdered him in cold blood after bringing him to the forest to supposedly play. I was terrified, but there was no solace to be found with my family as they all blamed it on me. I saw the fear, sorrow, and hatred in their eyes as they banished me. I was not the kind to idle, so I set out to find the wretched creature who killed my brother and deliver it the same fate he had recieved.
Just a simple little backstory but I think it's a pretty cool idea and I've had multiple kinda variations on this idea floating around my head for quite some time

Thinking about it, I want to wait until I can come up with a character I feel passionate about, because I don't want to do my whole switching characters or dropping out thing I tend to do in campaigns. I really, really want this to go well, so I'm gonna need a little time.
I still want a Shadowfell character, but I need more time to come up with a concept.
Ooh another cool idea I don't know any specifics but:
Shadow Monk/Assassin Rogue/Gloom Stalker Ranger multiclass of some combination of those. Escaped cultist, he was a member by birth, and his parents eventually helped him to escape, but they got killed by the leader as punishment. He is actively hunted by members of the cult, and seeks to end the cult's nefarious activities.
