I'd expect future earths to look sad with less landmass, more deserts, and substantially less polar ice. Of course it could be a crater-marked hellscape.

The one I saw was a more satirical take. It was only set about 100 years into the future, IIRC. The U.S. was broken up into around five different territories, each described in different ways — some as 1984-esque dictatorships, others lawless regions of complete anarchy. Texas had grown drastically in size and had absorbed several other Midwestern states, which is an extraordinarily frightening prospect for most any citizen of this world.
You’re probably right, though. In terms of climate and the natural world, the future is looking very, very grim.
Ok yall I keep changing my character, help me out here. I was gonna take Crossbow Expert so I could dual wield Hand Crossbows, but then I remembered I need a free hand for spellcasting. ASI or Sharpshooter? *still hoping to have Hand Crossbow, just one instead*
