First of all, I would like to say that it is good to be back. I have been banned for the past week and in that time I have been doing some thinking. I would like to apologize for what I called Gratis and I hope that you can forgive me. I have decided that it is in everyone's best interest and in the interest of my mental heath that I take a break from DnD Beyond. I will miss everyone here and I don't know when I will be back.
My wings were clipped, my heart in a chain, I suffered then, I walked through pain, but even now I know my strength, and I know I'll go any length to save the ones I love.
My least favorite person is me, but my favorite people are y'all. Keeper of Lore, Scribe, Writer.
Right now I'm trying to make a character with a "I'm just as afraid of you as you are of me" theme, but in a natural sense. Their main skill is going to be deimatic behavior (or aposematism, since I'm considering making him toxic): Eye spots, sudden "expanding" (like a cobra expanding its hood or a red panda holding up its arms), edgy designs (like bright colors), warding flares, etc.
What I'm wondering is how to display this in their design. They're a Harvest Hunter, so they have mutations that don't necessarily have to follow real-world natural precedents (due to being granted by eldritch entities), but I think taking inspiration from the natural world is "lit" as the humans would have said like two years ago.

i guess the first idea that comes into my mind would be some kinda of brain scanning or whatever this creature can do where they look at all of the opposing creatures fears and search for the strongest match to their own fear, then they can either shapeshift into something along that thing that creates fear or creates an illusion of some sort
Idk if that makes any sense, I also don’t know if that’s even what you were asking for but hopefully it serves some use

Those are both good ideas, especially given the WW1 theme I'm considering giving him.
What if his mutations came from a symbiotic plant creature? I can imagine him releasing clouds of pollen and fragrances to mimic chemical weapons (not actually harmful, but looks and smells scary), releasing seeds with explosive force (as some plants are known to do) to mimic bullets, thorns with a metallic sheen to mimic barbed wire, and so on.
He keeps away from fighting by making it seem like a fight is already going on.
