Their name is Adwin Artiste de La Morte, or just Adwin, and they are the former jester of a royal court who was beheaded by execution for the murder of several nobles and attempted assassination of the corrupt king. The king was a warlock of a death god pantheon (three death gods, to be exact) and one of the death gods watched Adwin’s execution. Adwin’s last words were basically a string of jokes, insults, and revealing the corruption of the monarchy. The death god found this so funny that when Adwin died smiling, the god revived him as a Grim Jester (Adwin still looks human though) in order to help topple the monarchy as a final, horrible joke (the god also wanted a magic book that the King got from them back) and so Adwin killed the king, and it was basically broadcast for an entire layer of the underworld to see. The other death gods who supported turning Adwin into a grim jester thought this was an absolutely hilarious joke and so they compelled Adwin to continue being an entertainer for the underworld, where he is eternally watched by a spectral crowd as he goes around playing cruel jokes on people at the command of the death gods. So basically now in order to keep himself alive he needs to keep entertaining a bunch of ghosts, so he decided to participate in the games to excite them.
oh yeah also Adwin killed the king because The king executed this Knight who was basically Adwin’s hero. She was Executed because she was secretly planning a rebellion against the king as well. Before she died he became the court jester because she thought he would be good at the job.
