Johnny Depp as Captain, Captain Jack Sparrow is a delight. They've all got their silly charms.
The fight scene on the waterwheel in the second movie was one of my favorite ones. If showed off the charms of three of the best characters all at the same time. (And when Elizabeth asked Barbossa to marry her and Will in At World's End. THAT was comedy.)
Honestly the fight on the waterwheel is one of the major things that ruined the second movie for me. It was just so ridiculous and obviously fabricated.
I guess it depends on how you watch the movie.
Like Pacific Rim. Stupid concept. Giant Robots punch Giant Monsters. But it works!
Yeah. I like to either be immersed in the story and world, awestruck by the artistry, or intellectually engaged by the themes and messages. When something that silly and obviously set up happens in a movie it takes me out of the action because of all the disbelief that must be suspended. And believe me, I can suspend a lot of disbelief. Life is short so I try to consume art that I know will inspire me, wow me, or better me.
I realize this does make me sound like a bit of a killjoy or art snob. I try not to be and I really do enjoy a wide range of media from Adventure Time to Studio Ghibli to old fashioned silent films. I guess I inherited this film pickiness from my Dad.
I like pirates of the Caribbean as a series, but Davy Jones is by far my favorite character, beating out basically everyone by a lot. The movies for the most part were kinda eh or just not that good (but most of movie one was pretty cool) but Dead man’s chest is my favorite exclusively because of the Davy Jones scenes. The rest of the movie was like a 5/10. As PJ said, the part of the movie with the native tribe… that was not good.
I... I like the Isla de Pelegostas scenes. The wacky climb up the cliff-face while in the wooden ball, scrambling when the kid sees them. Jack's makeshift fruit-pole-vault. The classic meme inspired from the sequence. It's a little mini-adventure before diving in the main plot to get you back in the PotC vibe.
