Reminds me a little of how sharks and dolphins sometimes end up working together when fish form a bait ball where the sharks from below can keep the bait ball from sinking too low for the dolphins to get to them.
It’s a similar thing with coyotes and badgers. The former is fast enough to chase down most prey, but can’t get to them if they go into a burrow. The latter can dig into burrows but isn’t fast enough to chase if the prey runs.

DO NOT REDEEM!"

Also, my friend tasked me with designing a boss monster. I'm curious to ask your advice, LCW, and some things I should do.
First it'll be a solo boss against a party of (I assume) 4 lv5s. (maybe 3, we'll see.) The DM didn't feel comfortable using a legendary monster so will keep it as a regular. Probably aiming for CR 9. Though also curious what your experiences are with DMs that don't know the mechanics as well if I should put that higher/lower. (He's used AI-generated statblocks in the past and sometimes he'll describe a condition that's applied if the attack hits and I'm like, "Bro, that condition doesn't exist. So I don't know what it does either.")
The monster is an NPC we've been travelling with (got the request after I suggested a tweaked statblock) that was previously based on the veteran stat block.
So far the changes I've made are minor. Added a reach melee attack based on the otyugh's tentacle and tentacle slam. And probably will add a cone acid spray for her.
But there's been a minor element of body horror to her that could probably get exaggerated after a transformation. So curious what delightfully devious ideas you might have.
