Haven't ran many PbP for dnd but want to give it a shot. Running a rather generic short campaign for a group of 3-6 players. Any player handbook content is obviously allowed. This is going to be a setting in my own homebrew world, fairly similar to campaign 9 of critical role if you are familiar with that!
You can roll for stats or take a standard array whichever you prefer. Only other thing I ask is that you post fairly often so we dont hit a lull. Wont stick to a strict poating time but if you can try for once a day that would be awesome.
Please post your character as well as what youd like to get out of the campaign, and also any questions you may have! 🙂
I'm very interested in this -- I've played almost exclusively AL since my regular group splintered about three years ago. It would be really nice to be able to consistently play a character again that has some long term RP opportunities rather than...powergaming, for the lack of a better word.
My character:
Name: Manfred Metternich
Race: Human
Background: Noble
Class: Bard
Ability Scores: STR 9 DEX 15 CON 14 INT 13 WIS 11 CHA 16
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Appearance: Around 5'10'' and lean, with pale skin and fair hair. His hair is honey blond and mostly slicked back, but his face is framed by two unruly locks of hair. He has a thin mustache that extends down into a slightly pointed goatee.
Backstory: The fourth son from a lesser noble family from the frozen North, Manfred knew he would never inherit enough of his father the Viscount's wealth to allow him to live a comfortable lifestyle. As a consequence, Manfred sought to do everything possible to earn his father's ire including ruining a commission with a local regiment and blaspheming so badly to be sent home from the seminary where his father hoped he would receive clerical training. Much to his father's chagrin, Manfred fell in with a group of performers, led by his mentor Hasal Lonagan, a gnome known throughout the realm for his talent with the violin and his biting satirical wit. After his father's manuevering led to the arrest of Hasal and the rest of his troupe (including Manfred's current paramour Keerla) on trumped up charges of fomenting insurrection, Manfred fled southward, vowing someday to make his father pay.
Personality: Bitter and sarcastic except when he is performing, Manfred still maintains many of the habits and attitudes of his wealthy background. His experience with Hasal's troupe of performers have his opened his eyes somewhat, however and he is a true friend to those who prove themselves (or those who express admiration for his musical prowess).
Background: Outlander Backstory: Survivor, as he is now called, is the sole surviving member of his clan after an attack on his people (enemy to be worked out with DM, maybe a dragon or just an avalanche?). Their spirits now reside within him, offering him guidance and urging him to prove himself in battle to honor their memory so that their rest may be secured. Survivor has felt it best to leave his homeland to accomplish this, and sought out lowlander territories to seek out a way to do great deeds and prove his worth, to make his survival count and honor his ancestors.
As for what I'm looking for, just a fun game with opportunities for challenging combat and solid RP. The last is as much up to us as you, but it sounds like we've got a group for it.
I may have interest. but yeah, I'd like clarification on what is allowed. In particular races and class. I've been wanting to try out a Kobold Artificer (Alchemist)~ Though kobolds are odd lil guys. Could switch out for my half elf version.
Questions: What you mean by any player handbook? As in just the players's hand book? or as in any booklet meant for players? How short is short? I'm angling for a short PBP. So that sounds great. Will it spoil Critical roll....Arc 9? cause there are aonly two campaigns I know of. so I assume its like.. arcs or the like you meant?. I am watchihng portions of the second one, so if it does spoil things , which episode s et? Generic info. What level, starting equipment or money. If starting equipement-can we presell things before the start (generally things we get-but don't want, or more aptly can't carry due to weights)
Name Zellgato Race Kobold (subrace unsure) Background Class Artificer (Alchemist) Ability Scores Ability scores: 15914131214 or Standard Array if its horrible (we'll see if I am chosen) probably standard array 12,14,13,15,10,8. with -2 str +2 dex +a subrace+1. not factored yet. Hrm. probably wouldn't be a good idea to be a kobold with standard or those rolled youch.
(do have a backstory for both character versions but felt like it was too long of a post so i edited them out for now)
My character (standard array) is a tiefling sorcerer, Draconic line (only because I don't have Wild Magic option in D and D beyond).
His name is Albanus the Black.
Long ago, one of Albanus' ancestors made a terrible pact with an ancient and powerful black dragon. While the exact terms of that pact are unclear as of now, what is clear is that Albanus' abilities have become more...profound and insistent, pushing him towards roads uncertain. Lately, he has been hearing whispers in his head; an ancient voice, deep and resonant, that infiltrates his dreams and sometimes, his waking life. Answers await him, but where? And with whom?
Looking over the submissions, I am modifying mine here...
Name: Dain Ironfist
Race: Dwarf (Mark of Warding)
Class: Artificer 1 / Wizard 4
Background: Sage
Backstory:
Dain is a sage and seeker of knowledge. His family left the fold of the main House long ago, and traveled to this new land. Here they work as crafters and merchants, providing goods for adventurers and commoners alike. Dain's skills lay more in scholarly pursuits though, so he left the family business to study at the local university, or some other area of knowledge in this area. He has taken to the study of the wizard arts, and is often out searching ancient ruins for artifacts or ancient tomes.
I'd be interested, just give me a second to make my character.
Ability scores:161816161310
I'm keeping just the Ability Scores because I don't think it'd be fair to change them. (Not that I would if given the chance.) I'll be making an entirely new post dedicated to my new character.

The campaign I'm assuming wont run for very long, I have it broken down into 3 arcs, each one being about 3-4 sessions long. I'm new to PbP so not sure exactly how long it will be, but its not a 2 year campaign is basically what I'm saying.
Also no spoilers for crit role season 2! I just mean that the homebrew world is similar to Matt's, just more of a lowere high fantasy than vox machina.
Starting level is 5, as far equipmemt goes you guys can pretty much get what you feel like your character would have, just no magic items. Otherwise any equipment is ok with me, and your character can carry it all of course.
Very much appreciate your interest! Either character is fine with me!
PbP doesn't really have sessions, but judging by the fact that you have 3 arcs, and that they're running for what would be equal to 3-4 sessions in a real game, I can estimate this game will be very long since PbP runs much slower than an actual game. Not that I have any complaints, I honestly would enjoy it either way.
Lia grew up in one of the major cities of your world, her mother working in a tavern there as a waitress. Lia has no idea who her father is, but, due to her half-elven features, knows he was not human. She has spent much time in the tavern her mother works at, talking to adventurersa nd wanting one day to follow them as they go out on their quests. When not at her mother's tavern, she is out on the streets, often with the wrong-sorts, learning to pick pockets and other such things.
If you are only allowing PHB...

Looks awesome! And yes planning on alot of rp options for you guys!
Hope thats everyone, I apologize for spreading these out like this, was not 100% on how the forum here worked but ive got it now lol 😛
I changed from Lia to Dain, please see my first post. Is that ok? I saw that another has posted a half-elf warlock, so did not wish to double-up there.
Also, changing to Dain will give us someone who is fairly tanky in the group. Right now I see we have submissions for:
warlock, rogue, sorceror, artificer, and bard. So very heavy on spell-casters, with them all adding a lot of utility options. Depending on subclasses any of those can be up-front fighters, but not sure what they are going with at this point.
Dain would be an up-front melee character, and probably as tanky of a character as you can make.
