Hello all! I am here today to offer up an invitation to join me in a collaborative writing experience. There are a lot of ongoing games on here, I'm in a few PBP games myself, and they are all a collaborative effort. But what I have in mind is a little simpler.
Basically, in this game there will only be 1 character that will be moving through the world. I will post what happens around the character and you as the community will decide what they do in response. More specifically, the first person to respond is the one who will move the story along. In this way anyone and everyone can be a part of the story! This game will be open to everyone to come and contribute, or just enjoy the story. I'm sure someone has tried something similar, but I haven't been able to find a game doing the same thing. So I decided to make my own!
We'll be starting with a fresh blank character in a small town. Who they become, and what they will do is up to you all!
So, if you are interested, follow along, and see what you can add to the story! Now let's get started. Remember, first to respond will be the one I use.
You awaken to the sound of chirping. The birds are busy getting ready for the day just outside your window. Rolling over, you curl up deeper into your covers, trying to fall back to sleep. You know you will have to get up soon and get your own day started, but for now you want to relax. Unfortunately, your mother does not agree. A sharp knock fills the room right before the door slams open.
"Rise and shine lump-bug! Don't you have any shame? Everyone else is already outside, come now, the day is wasting away why you relax."
You grumble as you struggle against the grogginess.
"Come now, come now, it's not all bad. I made your favorite breakfasttt."
You perk up.
She smiles, "That's right, and it's still warm. Come on, before it gets too cold. Remember you got a big day ahead of you today. Now get dressed." She gently closes the door and leaves you to your morning routine.
Slowly, you crawl out of bed and rub the sleepiness from your eyes, letting out a loud yawn. You go to your closet, sorting through your clothes, looking for what to take with you into the woods. Today you are going out with your father for your first hunt, so you want to be prepared. You decide on plain work clothes with the leather vest you got for your birthday. It doesn't offer much in terms of protection, but it should be fine against game animals. Next you strap on your work boots. They are worn, but reliable. Finally, you grab your belt, a fresh new knife holder sewn onto it.
Your outfit complete, you walk over to your mirror to take a look at yourself. What face do you see?
Although the burns are still evident you are reassured that in time they will fade away it was only a couple years ago now your powers manifested for the first time fire from your hands lighting your room on fire luckily your were saved in time. Still those green gold flecked eyes are sparkling, and your fiery red hair covers some of the burn on your left side. I’m gonna do great today I’ve got this!
Your red hair seems to blaze as you hype yourself up for the day. Though your powers are still in their early stages, your father believes it is a blessing from the gods.
"One day, you'll make the whole world shine," You recall him saying.
Taking one last look you head out to the kitchen. There on the table is a plate of your favorite meal, accompanied by a fresh cup of tea. Your mother is finishing up her own breakfast, she gives you a small smile as you join her.
Once you finish, she stops you at the door where your bag waits.
sigh, "Well, today is the big day, your first real hunt." Her eyes glisten as she looks you over. "Oh, I'm sorry, I know you have to go, but I can't help but get like this. Please be safe out there." She gives you one last final hug as you say your own goodbye, and head out the door.
You walk to the edge of the village, right where it meets the forest. There your father is already waiting along with two others. A wide man with a long beard, you know him as Angalor, a fellow hunter like your father. Next to him is a young man whom you recognize as Angalor's son. Though have seen around the village, you've never met him.
"Well, speakin' o'yo kin, here they ar now. Trouble gettin' up eh?" Anaglor chuckles as you approach. His son gives you a side eyed scowl, he doe snot seem very friendly.
"Haha, well, they've always been a bit laidback, but I promise you they are ready to go," Your father pats your shoulder. "See they've even got their dagger ready.
"Hehe, well ope ur rite Elnar," he turns to his son and slaps him upside the head. "Ey, don't be rude, introduce yer self ya boil."
"Ah! Why'd you do that for?" He cried out as he rubbed his head. With an annoyed glare he addresses you, " Hey, I'm Frilbor, n-nice to meet you."
"Ere we go, wern't so bad eh? Hahaha, Rite then, what's yer name then? What should we call ye?"
“Saradie, nice to meet you Frilbor. Angalor I hope we can all enjoy this hunt, it is my first you know. Father are we gonna stalk our prey on foot? Are we enough to form a drive, and flush out some grouse or deer?”
The excitement in her eyes is contagious and her favorite chicory tea has her all hyped up. She can’t help but cast glances at Frilbor, hoping he doesn’t resent that she is along for this hunt. As she fidgets around waiting to begin she feels the old surge inside of herself. Oh no no no not today please not today
Saradie immediately stops what she is doing closes her eyes draws in 3 large breathes and silently counts to 20, once she feels calm she opens her eyes ready, focused and in control she hopes.
"Ah-er, yeah good to meet you," Frilbor nods and then wanders off to prepare his gear.
"Gahahahaha, pay 'im no mind, Es always grumpy in tha mornin'. Gon on, get yerself preped wit yer pa and we'll head out."
Your dad chuckles as he prepares his own gear and addresses your question. "Well, of course Sar, on foot is the best way for tracking. Makes it easier to hide at a moment's notice. And, as you mentioned, makes it easier to drive out game. Oh yes, I'm sure we should be able to pick up some grouse or deer for dinner, but we'll also be hunting something...a little bigger," He shoots you a mysterious look.
He finishes up and then stands up. Walking over to a nearby tree, he pulls out a bulky leather wrapping with a tie around the center. Carefully, he unties it and opens it up on the ground in front of you. Inside you see there are a series of different weapons. A short bow, a short sword, a spear, a Warhammer, a battle axe, a crossbow, a club, a few darts (10), a hand axe, and a couple of javelins (4).
"Now I know you've been practicing on your own, so you should be able to handle a few of these fairly well. Just pick the ones you feel the most comfortable with. But remember, don't grab too many, you don't want to be weighed down. Once you're ready we'll head out."
(go ahead and pick two of the weapons to use, we will assume you are proficient with them and the knife on your hip)
Saradie smiles as she looks at each weapon finally strapping on the bandolier of darts (10) and hefting the spear in both hands imagining what her father was coyly hinting at.
A couple practice jabs and a mock bracing for a charging beast, after which she holsters the spear and casually draws and carries a dart in each hand.
(My apologies for the late reply, had a very busy weekend, thanks for waiting!)
Your father smiles as he watches your thrusts, nodding along in approval.
"My, she's a natural! Like she's been born wit tha spare in hand! She's defently your kin."
"Haha, well that's high praise comin' from you. But I'd say that she is better than me when I was that age. Alright! We are all ready to go, let's do it!"
With that he picks up his pack and you all take off into the woods. You head due east for about 5 miles. After you lose sight of the village, your father stops you.
"Okay, I think this is a good place to start looking for dinner. We'll split up and search in all directions, if you see anything or hear anything then give a call." He raises his hands to his mouth and gives a bird call to demonstrate. You aren't as skilled at it as he is, but you are good enough that you can use a few bird calls without issue. "Once, we track one down, we'll all converge on your signal and trap the game. Sound good? Great, then let's spread out."
Your father shoots you one final reassuring nod and heads off toward the East. Angalor heads Westward, Frilbor goes South, and you are left with the Northern direction.
Stalking through the woods you search for any signs of life.
(Please roll me a d20, right now you just have a +2, and describe how you conduct your search)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
16 listening watching quietly moving and pausing watching the ground for scat rubs or tracks ... remember the first thing you see is not your prey but signs of their passing and your ears can find what your eyes might miss...
Your initial searches do not bear fruit. Here and there you catch glimpses of an animal, but the trail is cold. Then, something sticks out at you from a couple of yards away. It's hard to tell from your position, but it looks like a small blackened splotch on the forest floor. You would need to get closer to be sure, but just at that moment you hear the one of your village's bird calls off to the South West.
You approach the area, and immediately the stench of burnt flesh hits your nostrils. Looking down at the splotch you see what looks like the remanences of a fire pit that was sloppily extinguished in an attempt to hide it. However, when you bring your hand closer to the spot you feel almost no warmth coming from it. This fire has been out for a while now, but no more than a couple of hours.
Looking around the forest floor, you gather that there were about two or three individuals. On it's own, this campsite is not strange. Hunters will often camp in the forest when moving about the countryside. But still, something is bothering you, something that feels off about the camp.
Suddenly, you realize why. It's the timing. Leading up to this hunt, you spoke to your father about the terrain, the fauna, and most importantly, about other hunters. He told you that your group would be the only group hunting in this area during these next couple of days.
Saradie is sure it’s no big deal but she stealthily heeds the bird call still hoping for a big tasty venison steak later. When she gets near any of the other hunters she waves for them to come nearer to her so she can tell them about her discovery, just in case.
Your inspection complete, you rush back to rendezvous with the rest of the party. By the time you arrive, the prey has been successfully stalked and slain. Your wish seems to have been heard as you see it was in fact a deer that was hunted. You approach just as Angalor is instructing Frilbor on how to cleanly slice the creature's neck. He struggles, but eventually he gets it.
They greet you warmly. Your father embraces you and reassures you that the next one will be yours. Angalor laughs boisterously in agreement.
The laughing stops when you mention the abandoned camp.
"Hmmm, that is strange. Why don't you lead us back towards it Sar."
Together you tie the deer to a log so as to take it with you. Once you arrive back at the spot your father bends down to get a closer look. He feels the ashes in his fingers and smells them. He frowns and keeps inspecting the sight. You see he exchanges a concerned look with Angalor, but when he turns back to you he simply smiles.
"Hah, well quite the interesting find. I'll admit it's a bit unusual to see another camp out here but it's not uncommon for other hunters from the surrounding area to come over here. We have treaties with several of them afterall. Nothing to be concerned about, they must not have gotten the word that we would need the space clear. But no matter, they look like they've left already." He points due Northeast.
"See there, they were heading away from us. They likely realized their mistake and made their way home before we could scold them haha."
"Heh, gud thing too, I wulda dun mor en scold 'em," Angalor raises axe above his head and twirls it dexterously. "Come now Lass, pay it no mind, com elp Fril wit this deer."
To your side Frilbor has lain the deer on the ground an dis trying to figure out where to start cutting.
Saradie points to the groin, “You’ll wanna start there contain the waste areas so they don’t spoil the meat.” If Frilbor makes room Saradie kneels down to show proper gutting techniques. “Boy Frilbor I wish this was my kill.” Saradie actually seems enthralled with the process.
"U-oh, right, thanks." He slides a shaky knife into the groin area. "I can't take all the credit though. My first shot went wide. All I did was wound it. My Father had to bring it down." He shakes his head, "I'm just no good with the bow. I 've been training, but it doesn't seem to be enough."
He makes room for you to join in on the cleaning. Together you start to make good progress on prepping the deer. You seem to be the more knowledgeable one out of the both of you so Frilbor follows your lead.
Meanwhile, your father and Angalor move off to the side and begin conversing about something. You notice that they are keeping their voices down to a whisper.
“Father all done even kept some bits for sausage. Is there a stream nearby to tidy up? Maybe find some more food, Filbor could use a little more practice.”
"Oh yeah, of course. There should be one down there a couple yards to the south." He gestures toward the area and then returns to his conversation.
Making your way down to the stream you find a comfortable spot where you can clean off.
(If you want to do something else here let me know)
Once you finish cleaning up, you head back towards the group. Angalor is busy getting the fire going, your father is nowhere to be found. Frilbor is finishing up the deer carcass and is preparing some steaks to cook up on the fire.
(If you want to do something else here let me know)
OOC You mean narrate the NPCs or fill in story detail? I can present my take on a developing sorceress. Think (fire starter).
Saradie immediately sees the meat being prepared and her stomach growls. Everyone turns a big smile at the young huntress, “Father needed to go make room for some food Angalor?” She without thinking and without reason reaches towards the crackling cook fire her hand making weird gestures. The fire settles into a low burning bed of hot coals perfect for cooking the meat. She looks very scared by what she just did and tries to cover her surprise, “Oh ha ha look at that better get some food on I’ll go find my dad.”
As Saradie wanders out to hopefully catch sight of her father she can't help but hold out her hand as she does so a flame appears above her open palm she tries to keep it from view holding it close to her body. She gets lost in the flame as it continues to burn just above her hand she instinctively knows that if she were to throw the ball of flame she could. She just finally decides to use the extra light to help her find her dad, maybe he will see it and come to her.

(my apologies once again, work was killer this week)
(Oh no yeah was great, I think I see what you're going for)
Angalor rubs his eyes, not sure of what he just saw. "Ma werd, must be gettin' tired. Cuoilda sworn I sa ya mov that fer. Heh "
They begin laying out the slabs of meat to start cooking.
"Yet dad? Oh he's just scoutin' ahed a bit. Wanted to check out the route. Shouldn't be long. Eyy Frilbor, careful wit that!"
While the two argue, you are free wander around. After touching the fire, you feel oddly energized.
