You find yourself standing in the newly built town square of Melsamir in the country of Rashemen. for weeks prior to now, you had been seeing ads looking for help in defending the town currently still under construction while the normal forces of Rashemen kept control of their borders. Rashemen had been under attack from the country of Thay from the south, who had formed an alliance with the Tuigan Horde, an invasion force from The Endless Wastes to the north. Due to the war with Thay, most who had seen the ads had ignored them, deciding not to chance finding themselves in the path of the Red Wizards who reside there.
Eve, Kanithar and Garcis had arrived on the first carriage to come into town, closely followed by a second one with Senna, Edge and Kaseon. The ride had been pleasant if not a little warm due to the time of year, but there had been a nice breeze almost the entire time making the trip decently bearable. Looking around, you immediately see several buildings worth noting around you. The first thing you see is a large Inn called The Weary Nomad. The next corner over is a tavern by the name of The Salty Boar. The next building has a sign that says Potent Potables and on the final corner you hear the familiar sounds of a smithy and you see a sign stating Tools & Tinkers.
Meeting you in the town square is the captain of the guard assigned to the town who introduces himself as Shaumar. He is an older human male wearing chainmail with a longsword at his side and a shield strapped onto his back. He is a large man who looks to have seen many a fight due to several small scars on his bearded face and a large nose that has obviously been broken more then once. Behind the guard captain is another four guards standing at attention, and as you glance over you immediately notice all four men are also older gentlemen as well.
Shaumar steps up with a smile as he looks each one of you over as if assessing you immediately. "Damn fine day when not one but TWO carriages roll up with folks willing to help defend the honorable people of Rashemen. We've been sending out ads for weeks now and only one had come before you answered it. What made you lot decide to sign up?"
Edge hops out of the second carriage even before it stops, immediately brushing off his grayish-white spotted fur, before stretching his lean 6'5" frame to it's full extent, his arms stretching into the air, even his claws clicking out to add an extra inch of reach to the skies. Polished leather armor glistens in the summer sun, and a rapier dangles at his waist
He quickly takes in the other three who have gotten out of the first carriage as well, taking a step back to keep his distance. He smiles at all of them, but his smile broadens when he takes in the kobold. He holds his hand out to see if he can estimate the height of the kobold. Then rolling his shoulders, and shaking out his arms he performs a partial bow towards Shaumarm, making sure not to get too close to the captain of the guard.
"Warm sands, captain friend," Edge says in way of greeting in accented common. "Edge of the World greets you."
He turns gracefully in the center of the square to take in the fledgling town.
"This why Edge sign up. What better place to learn secrets than moment secrets made?"
Finally he notices the age of the captain and the other guards.
"Ahh. The experienced and wise guard new town. Good," Edge says then pauses a moment before holding up one finger to indicate he has just thought of something. "If town already has experience guards, why need Edge and others? And who came before us?"
Kaseon slowly steps out of the second carriage, looking almost hesitant, but quickly gaining confidence with the greeting of the captain and his travel companion's quick response. He's a plain looking fellow, average height, average weight, brownish hair and brown eyes, no beard or any other distinguishing marks and wearing plain traveling clothes, if you didn't know any better, you'd almost think his nondescript features were somehow intentional. He hefts his backpack more securely on his shoulder and uncomfortably adjusts the stiff, new looking leather armor and repositions the dagger hanging at his belt before moving it back where it'd been. As he moves to stand near the others he speaks up, his voice sounding much stronger and more confident than he looks, "Hello Captain Shaumar, my name is" there's a fraction of a pause before, "Kaseon. It's great to meet you. I came because I firmly believe in everyone's chance to make a fresh start, and what better town than one that's new. Here, we can all build a new, better future for ourselves and our kin. And yes, as our companion asks, is the one who came before us around?"
Senna steps out of the second carriage last. Those who had been in the carriage already got a better look of her but stepping out she still wears a simple cloth robe over her shoulders with a hood covering her head. She takes a few steps out and looks around first, patiently waiting for the others to introduce themselves.
The robe she wears only connects at her neck, leaving a part of her front visible. The clothes underneath her robe are clearly plain but more of a tight fit on her body. Clearly she is no maid and dressed with purpose.
Senna watches the Tabaxi and Human, who she already met inside the carriage to see how they behave themselves with the captain and takes in the others who also seemed to come to aid the town.
I am Senna Ashenvaleshe says as she lowers her hood to reveal herself. Displaying a beautifull elven face of a young woman. However the tone of her skin is blueish grey and her hair is pure white. As a gust of wind picks up some strands of hair blow freely with it revealing the length of her hair must reach somewhat past her shoulders.
She continues her introduction I am sent by the Order of the Gauntlet, our mission is to protect those in need and oppose tyranny wherever we go. This time her words sound very methodical and rehearsed. I look forward to working with you all to make this town a safehaven for its people. she will not add questions at this time, instead she gathers information with observing for now
A young tiefling woman climbs down from the cart gracefully, on the far side from the guards. She walks calmly all the way around the cart, taking everything in, with her tail flicking playfully behind her. She smiles at her companions and listens to everyone as they make their introductions...
After making her way around to where the guards stand, she approaches the captain and waits politely before introducing herself. "Captain... it's very nice to meet you", she says, making a point of flashing a disarming smile towards each of the guards gathered to greet them. "I'm Eve", she continues, offering the captain a small half-bow-half-curtsy. "There are many dangers abroad these days. But there are opportunities too... ... for those who can take the initiative...", she says this, gesturing around at the new town square here, in a way that she hopes flatters the guards a little and any locals working nearby. "I'm here, to offer my services in that regard". This could perhaps seem a little cryptic but she has a playful charm about her that often seems to puts people at ease.
With that, she smiles again and bows as she takes a step or two back into the group.
Description:
Eve's skin is not quite scarlet, but it's a distinctive shade of red nonetheless, and her hair is long and black (currently tied back for the journey, not unlike Kanithar's). She’s petite and slight. And by human standards she looks perhaps early-twenties. There's a certain smooth poise about her too (like a cat that looks content enough, but you're not sure if it's getting ready to pounce).
She wears a very smart set of dark leathers, that look a lot older than she does. They're not shabby - they're particularly well kept in fact - but they're noticeably old: like a beautiful old vintage guitar. And anyone looking for such things, might see she has two small daggers in twin sheaths hanging from a slender belt around her waist, the scabbards tied down to her thighs. She also has long tiefling horns (maybe 10 inches) that sweep up and back away from her face. There's certainly no mistaking her heritage, and she wears it proudly.
Garcis had spent most of his own time in the wagon messing about with something that he kept stuffing back into his pack after getting frustrated with it several times. The small dragon kin seemed to be a bit early as if expecting something or someone to pop out and attack him. Once it seemed like that would not happen he relaxed, striking up a bit of conversation with those that rode with him and the driver.
With a yawn he hole down from the wagon and stretches out his stiff muscles, putting his hand up to shade his eyes from the sun. While it took a bit his eyes adjusted and he looked around, nodding to the guard captain and the seemingly elderly guards behind him. "I wanted to get away from where I was before. I did not have fond thoughts of the place."
The guard captain listens attentively to each of you as you explain your reasons for offering to help and only after everyone has had a chance to speak does he begin to answer any questions being asked. "We need help because, while we are indeed experienced it's not quite the way you are thinking. We have a small guard staff which primarily consists of retired citizens and most of the experience the majority of these fellows have is not in combat. They are former tradesmen from our more established towns and cities that came out of retirement to defend this town while it's being built. Almost all of our actual warriors and defenders are out on the northern and southern borders striving to hold back the ones trying to invade. It has been a very trying time for us, but we put our life on the line for our country."
"As for our initial arrival, she's in the tavern right now with that wolf of hers. Goes by the name of Ridley, a halfling woman. She's a sweet little thing, but don't let that fool you. Her carriage was attacked on the way in and the driver said she killed two of the men in less than a minute and knocked the third man out to bring back for questioning."
As the guard captain glances over, you follow his gaze to see a woman dressed in a thin white robe coming up the street from a small building past the inn. She strides up to your group with a smile and introduces herself, "I take it you are new recruits? It's a good thing you've come. My name is Imzel and I'm the town physician. I'm sorry to be brief, but I need to speak to the captain for a moment."
She motions the captain to follow and they step away and whisper for a few moments, and you can see Shaumar's eyes widen with surprise. Turning back to you he says, "I'm sorry folks, I have another matter to attend to for the moment. Please take this time to take any belongings you have to your rooms. The man in charge of the inn is Penn Murnyethara and he will make sure you get settled in nicely and get you some food as I am sure you are hungry after your long ride. Mayor Hulmar will want to meet you soon as well." With that, Shaumar and Imzel walk back to the building she came from.
Edge:
Edge: You overhear Imzel and the captain speaking somewhat:
Imzel: "...found another one..." Shaumar: "...this time?" Imzel: "... to my office not feeling..."
Kaseon leads the way to the inn, looking forward to sleeping in a real bed again. Looking to the others, "So, uh, how much experience do you all have in real combat? I've hit a few hares with my sling, and I've got some magic that I can use to hinder an enemy or three, but I've never really been in a stand up fight."
Senna follows the others into the Inn, but not after watching where Shaumar and Imzel head off to.
Once inside she will look for a place to sit and put her things to get some food first. Senna will take off her robe and place it over her bag. As she does this two small daggers become visible on her lower back. Attached on top of her belt in an X shape, hidden by the robe at first.
As she turns around more things are displayed on her belt but she wastes no time sitting down at the table. As she adjusts herself to get a good seating her necklace will twinkle in the rays of light it catches. A small crystal is at the end of it, hanging on her chest. The crystal is without a doubt a much higher quality than anything else she carries with her. The crystal is made of two sections, the top right a deep blue and the bottom left a bright red color tone. In the center the two colors mix, not blurring into eachother but instead twisting together like the threads of a rope, both keeping their respective colors.
When all our seated Senna will address Kaseon. I have practised within the Order for years to control.. she quickly corrects herself.. to channel my magic.Ive seen some combat but not in the frontlines, my captain always kept me away from the thick of it.
She pauzes a moment thinking of what would be usefull to add.
I know healing spells as well as other magics. Let us hope i will have little need for it.
Garcis looks to the others as they speak, keeping quiet until they have spoken first. As he listens it looks as though he is making mental notes on everything being said. When it comes time for him to speak he clenches his hand and runs the other along his arm as if trying to think hard on something.
"I have not fought many things but I have for the most part known how to use weapons when I pick them up. While I can fight in melee my skills seem to be best when I can fight at range. I have skill with a bow but did to my size it can be challenging to use a longbow compared to a crossbow."
Eve follows the party towards the inn. She smiles and nods her agreement when Edge mentions a drink...
She sits next to Senna (catching sight of her daggers) and comments “That’s a lovely pendant. Quite beautiful on you”.
And as talk turns to people’s capabilities, she contributes, “I’m by no means a warrior... but I have a few tricks up my sleeve that have bought me valuable seconds in the past, and I have a little offensive magic. I’m still learning, but what I know can be quite damaging at range”.
She looks back at Senna and adds, “and I know my way around a dagger too, if it comes to that”.
She’ll try to catch the eye of the waiting-staff too, and order a drink.
Edge happily enters the inn and looks around for waitstaff right away but not seeing one free he heads to the bar and taps his clawed digits on the top to attract a bartender’s notice.
While he does, he speaks in a loud voice so that his new companions can hear him.
“Ah, all have good skills. Fight. Magic. Weapons. Edge solve mysteries. Mystery behind locked door. Mystery in high window on top high castle. Mystery in buttoned pocket,” he says and then stops suddenly.
Forgetting about the bartender he moves quickly, gracefully, not touching a chair or getting too close to anyone else on his way to the table the group sits at.
Transfixed, he stares at the crystal pendant hanging from Senna’s neck. He turns his head to change how the light reflecting off of it changes. How the sparkle reflects the depth, the clarity, the cut.
”Senna must tell Edge all about Crystal. Maybe let Edge touch crystal.” He says as if charmed by a spell.
He laughs to himself and smiles at the group. He then stands and calls loudly for ale.
he turns back to the group, remembering something.
”Yes. Mystery already. Guard men find something. Something scare guards.“
Senna turns to Eve after she complements the pendant. Thank youshe says with a smile.
After Edge requests to hold the crystal Senna moves back in her chair a bit. Uhm perhaps another time. she moves one hand slowly but steadily over the crystal to break his gaze. The crystal is used to channel my magic, it helps control my energy. I .. its not .. its better if it is with me.
Senna sighs somewhat relieved as Edge's attention goes to something else.
Edge brushes off the seat of any empty chair and sits down at that table, his head still turning to find a server.
"Town doctor say something like found another one," Edge says without taking his eyes from the bar. "Then captain ask question. Then doctor say something come to his office with no feel."
He finally turns back to the group.
"Edge thinks something not told to us. We not just guard against bears and small goblins."
“Hmm...”, Eve observes, “it seems there’s already things to investigate here... We should try and find out from the Captain and the Physician what’s going on. And the Captain said we should speak to the Mayor now we’re here too”.
”Let’s get some food and drink, check out our rooms, and then maybe enquire around town”.
Kaseon smiles, "I've always had a knack for getting people to tell me things. I might be of more help with that than a fight, to be honest. Where should we go first? And when?"
