In the campaign, I'm running right now, I'd like to add one of my player's previously played character as a recurring NPC. But I can't seem to be able to hide the character from the group. Is there any way to add a premade character to an existing campaign?
Yes. Use the same invite link that you sent to the players, you will be given the same choice they are to either join with a character, or make a new one. Select the one you want and join with it. If it is your Player’s Character then they would have to do it. Once it’s in the campaign it can be “unassigned” and then you would be able to “claim” it to use as an NPC.
Without any of the players, including the original player, being able to see any changes to the character?
Once you “claim” it, it becomes your character. The OG player will lose the character and no longer be able to do anything with it unless/until you give it back to them. Set it to “privat” at the bottom of that same home tab. All they will be able to see them is Name, Race, and Class/Subclass.
Although I'd think an option link that'd make it easier to figure out how do it. Something like a link in character drop down menu to join into a group without being invited to it.

It requires invite so that people cannot crash your campaign.

Is there no way to make them invisible until they are revealed in the story?

Yes, wait to add them. You can also “deactivate“ a character so that it won’t count as part of the party, but the players will still be able to see it as a deactivated PC.
An option for the DM to make NPCs totally invisible to the players would be helpful. Or you could add the character builder to the monster homebrew. Making them invisible sounds easier though.
This needs to be a feature. Officially making a feature request. Ability to add characters as NPCs. Ability to make them invisible, and have private sheet options. Also, the ability to add more than one character at a time. Who's with me?

Ok, cool.
How do I send the link to myself?
You don’t have to, you already have the link. You just need to copy it and paste it into your browsers URL bar and hit Enter.

I definitely second this.
This isn't the place to make feature requests. That would be this thread
