Hello, I recently acquired an Immovable Rod in my session. I have seen many uses of it and I thought a cool one would be to use it as a grappling hook by tying a rope around it. I was wondering if there could be any way with my character (Level 5) to make it stop midair? Or even a way to make it so I can toggle it and untoggle it then pull it back. Its more a way of remotely activating the button.
Unless you have some sort of telekinesis, no. You could always do the classic Immovable Rod salmon ladder. Jump up in the air with the rod over your head and press the button, then pull up and jump while pressing the button again to release the rod, then extend it above your head at the top of the jump and press it again. Repeat until you're as high as you want to go.

I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!

I don't think this works in 5e. Each button press is an action, so you can't push the button twice in one turn without Action Surge. Haste and the Thief Rogue's Fast Hands don't apply since Use An Object can't be used to activate a magic item.

I'm a big proponent of not using turns and rounds and the action economy outside of combat.

Would imbuing the switch with Ki then releasing the Ki allow me to toggle it? Then I could attach a rope to it so I can pull it back?

Thanks, I'll speak to my DM about it as he's normally pretty relaxed coming to how we use our items.
I’d say having an Immovable Rod makes it worth using an ASI to take the Magic Initiate Feat for Mage Hand!

I don't think this works in 5e. Each button press is an action, so you can't push the button twice in one turn without Action Surge. Haste and the Thief Rogue's Fast Hands don't apply since Use An Object can't be used to activate a magic item.
Mage Hand also forbids activating magic items, and the rod specifies a creature has to be doing the button pressing too.
Of course the DM could always bend the rules but as written I can't think of a good way to turn this into a grappling hook.
