just so you understand where i'm coming from this is the wording on the ritual invocations, book of secrets.
Prerequisite: Pact of the Tome feature
You can now inscribe magical Rituals in your Book of Shadows. Choose two 1st-level Spells that have the ritual tag from any class’s spell list (the two needn’t be from the same list). The Spells appear in the book and don’t count against the number of Spells you know. With your Book of Shadows in hand, you can cast the chosen Spells as Rituals. You can’t cast the Spells except as Rituals, unless you’ve learned them by some other means. You can also cast a Warlock spell you know as a ritual if it has the ritual tag.
On your Adventures, you can add other ritual Spells to your Book of Shadows. When you find such a spell, you can add it to the book if the spell’s level is equal to or less than half your Warlock level (rounded up) and if you can spare the time to transcribe the spell. For each level of the spell, the transcription process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp for the rare inks needed to inscribe it.
My question. Say a Warlock spell has a ritual tag I.e. comprehend languages, how would i go about adding those spells to my ritual book, i imagine i'd have to add it as a warlock spell first then pay and study the required amount?
then next level up, swap it out for something else but always have it as a ritual in my book?
My assumption, which could be wrong, is that any ritual spells that go into your book have to be “found” like a scroll or spell book. Learning a spell just as any warlock does at level up you can swap them but cannot put them in your book even if it is a ritual as it is part of your pact magic and not a “found” spell.
so if you took comprehend languages as a warlock spell you cannot put it in your book. But if you find that spell as a scroll you can add it to your book and then swap out the spell known for something else at level up.

Agreed, but if you’re proficient in Arcana you can scribe a spell scroll yourself and then copy it into your Book of Ancient Secrets. RAW it’s a pain, but it’s worth doing to me.
This feature does not require the spell to be on a scroll or in a wizards book, even though those are likely the most common sources of spells for you to find. The wording in the book of ancient secrets invocation is actually a bit more relaxed than that of a wizards. It merely requires you to “find” a spell in some form or other. This ritual boom feature is also not restricted by class lists either, so any ritual can be transcribed into the book.
it doesn’t mean too. Having to practice the ritual to figure it out like the wizards spell book feature even though the transcribe costs are the same. Doesn’t specify mastery of it or really any skill necessary at all.
would be hard pressed to figure out why you couldn’t just write down “known” ritual warlock spells to switch them out after gaining a level.
its probably possible to find spells written on ancient walls in crypts like the dragon words in Skyrim.

If you learn this spell and then decide to swap it out, you no longer know this spell.

This makes more sense. You learn the spell, scribe it for ritual use, swap it out. All other spells from different spell lists follow these rules:
On your Adventures, you can add other ritual Spells to your Book of Shadows. When you find such a spell, you can add it to the book if the spell’s level is equal to or less than half your Warlock level (rounded up) and if you can spare the time to transcribe the spell. For each level of the spell, the transcription process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp for the rare inks needed to inscribe it.
For Wizards, the costs in time and resources associated with transcribing a found spell are meant to represent the total expenses required to take an unknown spell and do some trial and error attempts until you figure out your own preferred tweaks. Kinda like finding a recipe you like, you have too cook it a couple times to adjust the seasonings, etc. a little to make it your own before you take the special care to do the handwritten calligraphy when you add it to your family recipe book. (Okay, the analogy started to loose something around the calligraphy part, but you catch my drift.) And because Wizards have an advanced degree they can create their own recipes spells at an equivalent expense, 2 each level.
For Book of Ancient Secrets, it’s the same basic principle, but it has to be spells that can be cast as a rituals, and they need a base “recipe” from which to start. By creating a scroll first from to use as that base recipe, it effectively only really increases the costs of time and money. Since they haven’t had the same formal education, in order for them to create a recipe from scratch (take a known spell and figuring out how to do it as a ritual all by yourself) it takes a few more tries to get it just right, so it costs a little bit more and takes longer.
Either way, they are still better off than all of those talented home cooks running around with practically no training whatsoever, poor Sorceres.
