I noticed on Forgotten Realms wiki that in previous editions there was a third type of dragon in addition to chromatic and metallic dragons, the gem dragons, which consists of: amethyst, topaz, emerald, sapphire, obsidian and crystal dragons. I can't find any official lore about them in 5e, so I was wondering whether they had been retconned or if I've missed their inclusion somewhere?
The Gemstone Dragons, being Neutrally aligned, tended to be a bit “boring” compared to the Evil Chromatic & Good Metallic Dragons, so they haven’t been resounding demanded yet in this edition. Also, Gemstone Dragons are Psionic and they hadn’t quite decided how they were going to handle that for 5e until recently.
I think MCDM either published them too, or is working on them. I know they had beautiful minis made.
Yep, Strongholds & Followers contains 20 gemstone dragons; amethyst, obsidian, emerald, ruby and sapphire, with the four ages each. They have some Matt Colville Brand Weird™ psionic rules (one of them forces two players to switch character sheets!) but are overall quite fun.
And yes, the miniatures are gorgeous and it pains me I can't get my hands on them
There are 5 gemstone dragons: Amethyst,Crystal,Emerald,Sapphire, and Topaz. Unearthed Arcana 2021: Draconic Options. Sardior, the Ruby Dragon, creation/child of Bahamut and Tiamat, is attended by Ancient Gem Dragons: one for each of the gem dragon types. He is the god of the Neutral gemstone dragons. https://********/bestiary/adult-sapphire-dragon-sads.html. I want to see a new official 5e book with the Unearthed Arcana and gem dragons in it (and more dragon lore).
Only the people running them made them boring. A chaotic neutral, or even a lawful neutral, can be more extreme than good or evil, because they don't care about good or evil, only pure chaos or law.

From when D&D wasn't cool, but we played it anyway. I got started when some geeky guys where I worked invited me to play with them and I gave it a try. My first character was a human cavalier named Tara the Giant Killer. We used to play once a month on a Saturday. We would start at 7 or so in the morning, and quit somewhere around midnight. Fun times and fond memories.
Release date October 19, 2021, so seven weeks from tomorrow. The first bullet point on the why-you-should-buy-this list is "Introduces gem dragons to fifth edition!"
Your thread got nerco'd by the Fizban hype machine. Gem dragons are psychic and can manipulate the participants of discursive spaces like that.
Also they're shiny and sparkly. Shiny and sparkly things always draw massive amounts of attention. Because they're shiny and sparkly. The only way they could be more persistent was if they were somehow dark and brooding and shiny and sparkly (please don't try mixing those things again, we're still cleaning up the glitter after the last bit of Twilight nonsense).

The only officially published gem dragon is the Adult Sapphire Dragon.

There are still a lot of creatures from previous editions that have not been converted into 5e, Gem Dragons included.

Kobold Press published Gem Dragons of Faerun in the DMs Guild. It's not "official" but KP makes quality stuff.
I think MCDM either published them too, or is working on them. I know they had beautiful minis made.
