This is a really simple connection, and I just wanted to make a thread discussing this idea I had.
Since Monsters of the Multiverse, Changelings have become less attached to Eberron and moved into the wider D&D Multiverse. And according to 5e Elven lore, Elves used to be genderfluid fey creatures that were able to shapechange at will until they gave up that ability because of Lolth. In Monsters of the Multiverse, Changelings are Fey that are able to shapechange at will (and even change size and genetic sex).
So . . . Changelings should be related to elves somehow. Maybe they're the descendants of elves that didn't side with Lolth, so they never lost their ability to shapechange but were still cast out by Corellon to the Feywild because he's a jerk. Or maybe they're elves that have been blessed by Corellon to get back a bit of their shapechanging abilities (maybe after pleasing him in a former life, or something like that). Or if they ever make a First World/Prehistoric D&D setting, instead of having all of the types of Elves that we currently know of, they could present Changelings as the settings "Elf" race and say that all of the variant types haven't evolved yet.
That's it. Any thoughts? How would you approach this if you were to do something similar to this?
.......I hate that I love this idea so much. Like, I can't even be mad, this is brilliant and I am VERY okay with this idea.
*proceeds to scribble this down for use in Planegea instead of the weird half-dream elves there*
I'd probably approach it as, if we are forced to use existing lore, the changelings that are now fey are those primeval elves who purposefully fled from Corellon out of fear that, in his capriciousness, he may punish them too by binding them to one form, and by doing so, they've been stripped of their trance ability (since changelings need to sleep as regular mortals do).

Thank you. I'm glad you like the idea.
I'm kind of surprised that WotC themselves didn't make this connection and that I've never seen anyone mention this possible connection before. I just thought of this a few weeks ago and thought that it would be cool to make a setting where this is canon.

Planegea's elves are half-dreams? I've heard of Planegea, but didn't know that their elves were like that.

Well, from what I can tell, Trance only exists as way for Elves to reconnect with their former lives. So, maybe Primal Elves needed to sleep like most other creatures? It's a bit unclear, but that would be a slight issue.

Not to give up too much since Planegea is a paid homebrew setting (that I found totally worth it), elves there are "half-dreams" because they're still within the World of Dreams (aka the Feywild, but before the world has settled) while the drow are within the World of Nightmares (aka the Shadowfell). They're like... *there* but not? sometimes transparent, sometimes changing appearances entirely as they are still connected to their ancestral home.
As far as the Trance part, you *do* have a point. if the changelings are being the primeval elves, who were nigh immortal rather than just reincarnating, they wouldn't need to trance since they only have the one life rather than a long life AND the history of reincarnations to go off of...

Oh man, this is SO SMART. Ugh, I absolutely love it. GREAT idea!! (This is the author of Planegea, by the way.)
Wish I'd thought of this, I'm super jealous of the take... changelings as primal elves is absolutely inspired. Awesome connection.
you are? O-O
(then I'ma just say thanks for giving me a place full of inspiration for a possible novel I've been off and on working on! >->)

It is a very interesting idea that I like. The only thing that confuses me is I have read too many different things so I guess I need the DnD Basis for what a changeling is and where it comes from. For me a changeling is one of 3 things.
1. Either a race of fey or fairy that is snuck into the cribs of unsuspecting people and left after the original child is stolen.
2. A by product of a Hag seducing (name your race). The offspring will determined by the race of the father and the type of hag the mother is. They are usually left with the father's family or tribe until they grow up and the Hag produces "a calling".
3. A lesser race of doppelganger.

Absolutely! We're all just fans of the game around here.
Lore-wise this fits the Forgotten Realms Setting.
